Not a Duran 3 divisions removed from his prime v peak Hearns.
Cuevas is one of the longest reigning welter champs in boxing, you can't argue that despite his rapid decline.

You can argue it because what was he the champ of? A division he shared with Palomino?

I'll agree to disagree. I'm in the middle of Spinks vs Qawi right now.

Palomino was hardly garbage, much better division than currently.

Duran was great but he wasn't going to beat Hearns by the time they fought, nearly everyone recognised that at the time.

Cuevas had been champ for years and was a murderous *welterweight* puncher.
Hearns was also a better light middle than welterweight IMO.

    Cool, enjoy.

I would have to say the Roberto Duran win for me. This is because the only other fighter to put Duran on the seat of his pants was Esteban De Jesus, as a lightweight, plus Roberto was more legendary than Pipino Cuevas at that point in time.

In your opinion, should the fact that Cuevas fought such a pathetic fight and put up so little resistance factor in at all?

Cuevas .was rightly feared in the welterweight division if he had landed first it could.of been the other way round..A Duran fight at that point rather than later on would of been a real war.

    Duran quite clearly to me.

Duran probably a Top 10 ATG pound for pound. Never been knocked out in over 100 fights. Went on to win the middleweight title 5 years later. He was not prime but also far from shot when he fought Hearns.

But whether or not Palomino was garbage, who was the WW champ during this time? Both of them? Just Palomino? Who?

I'm not being funny but no one of that era was going to beta Hearns at 155. The guy was next level talent.

Again you say Cuevas has been champ for years, champ of what?

It is true had Cuevas landed his best left hook on Hearns chin that fight goes the other way. And in round 2 he was swinging just that Hearns was pulling his head out of the way.. A lot of other guys would have been hit with those punches. Hearns fought a perfect fight.

Duran had a couple of moments in that fight but Hearns quickly landed again to take the momentum away from him.

No. Duran actually tried. He just wasn’t able to get anything going against the onslaught. Cuevas, a fighter notorious for unrelenting pressure, scurried away like a frightened mouse the entirety of the fight, offering no resistance. When his fight or flight kicked in, he flew. He fought scared because he was scared.
