Just as the title says. Im not talking about fights at the end of their careers like Tyson against Mcbride etc. Is it Tysons loss to Douglas, Lewis loss to Mcall??? Frazier To Foreman? etc
Was going to say Ali losing to Spinks after 6 or 7 fights whatever it was - but that is a bit harsh I guess coz Ali was pretty much at the tail end - maybe Tyson for Douglas or maybe Dempsey for Flynn (although I don't beleive that was genuine) - also was thinking Liston for Ali II (Ali never knocked people out in the first round ever!) (but again I think that one was bogus too - it's looking more and more like Tyson for Douglas followed by maybe Lewis for McCall I
I agree with Ali-Spinks, however if ali was good enough to beat him thje second time round, he should not have lost to him in the first place. Whats more embarassing getting schooled by BD while knocking him down and coming in undertrained) or getting sparked by Mccall with one punch??? Frazier got pwned by Foreman
Tyon looked completely disinterested against Douglas and had been getting bounced around in sparring. Frazier-Foreman, Lewis-McCall were far more emphatic.
Flynn KO1 Dempsey 1917 is the most humiliating. The 36-19-17 Fireman brutally KO'd the 24-1-5 Dempsey in round 1! "With Dempsey still bent over and walking toward Flynn, both forearms and gloves covering his face, Flynn rushed again. The Pueblo battler gave Dempsey's head a quick shove toward his right and sent a short right hand hook through Dempsey's guard and straight to the point of the chin. (Salt Lake Telegram)" "Jack Dempsey of Salt Lake was knocked out at Murray, a suburb of Salt Lake City, Tuesday night by Jim Flynn of Pueblo, Colo., ten seconds after the men shook hands. Flynn pushed down Dempsey's guard with his right and swung his left to the jaw. The Salt Lake man sunk down for the count and it was twenty seconds after Flynn had been declared the winner before Dempsey regained his feet." - San Antonio Light (San Antonio, TX, USA)" Considering that Dempsey was down for so long, & felt the need to rematch Flynn a year later, i highly doubt this was a dive.
A one punch KO can happen to anyone. It doesn't happen often, but I have no doubt it can. Also the coming in under trained excuse might be true, but training hard is probably 90% of the fight in boxing. A fighter who doesn't train isn't a good fighter He may have been near enough physically prime back then, but as an overall package he was still a few years from his real prime. Plenty of guys have losses on their record before they hit their peak
Dempsey-Flynn maybe, but he was still quite obscure and pre-prime then. Johnson was KO'd by Choynski. IF Walcott is an ATG, he has a few. Or Max Schmeling ..... L KO 1 Gypsy Daniels. Lewis's losses are as bad as it gets in a world's spotlight prime years context, I think. That's if we disallow Ali's loss to Spinks.
Dempsey went an embarrassing 1-2-2 in his fight series against Fat Willie Meehan occurring between 1917-1918. The worst being his 4 round decision loss in September 1918 to Fat Willie, less than 10 months before his "absolute peak performance" against Willard. Some info on Meehan: "Famous for never training or doing any roadwork whatsoever, Willie Meehan ate whatever and whenever he wanted. He fought in all divisions from flyweight to heavyweight. As a rotund heavyweight, it was said: "He is so fat, blows do not make an impression on him, and he is so awkward, that even the cleverest of opponents can find no way to reach him effectively..."
Douglas was actually pretty good and a prodigous talent that was inconsistant, it was just Tyson was considered unbeatable and Douglas gave up training after his big win
