For my money Cooper is a legit puncher.

Tunney got Dempsey 2X, Tommy Gibbons, then there's Carp. After that, I'd guess that Spalla might be the next strongest puncher on Gene's resume.

In recent times, Ruiz. They sure steered him away from the big hitters > Tua.

Years ago, I thought Norton was guided away from the divisions big hitters, especially after that Foreman bout. It was a long time before he fought another big hitter and there were some big hitters around at the time.

I thought post prison Tyson was steered away from the hitters. Only one he fought was Lewis. They matched him against catchers and light hitting guys instead of the dangerous types. Instead we got opponents like Savarese and Mathis and so on. I wanted to see Mike in some gunslinger affairs.

Wlad, but thats because there is no real punchers left in the division. Except Haye, the last wlad fought was Brewster and sanders....And what happened there.

I can't bring myself to include Ken in my consideration, as he never won a championship fight with the title on the line going in. (Norton-Young was only declared a championship bout by the WBC retroactively.) However, I agree it's revealing that he was steered clear of Lyle and Shavers through the mid 1970s, especially since he broadcast color commentary from ringside for a number of Earnie's matches during this period. Light a fire under Bugner's ass, and even he might have been a threat to Norton. (Joe looked plenty lethal against Dunn and Denis. The man just needed to be pissed off a bit.) Of course he had to fight George in Caracas if he was to win the title, or else he'd have never taken Foreman on. (Major, major props to Frazier for having the sheer balls to step in the ring a second time with George without a world title on the line. People sometimes take it for granted how he risked looking as bad as he did in Kingston a second time. Can you see Norton rematching Foreman, Shavers or Cooney? I sometimes wonder if Smoke took to a wheelchair because the exertion of carrying around his giant gonads was wearing him out.)

Bowe was the first guy I thought of. Particularly because he fought at a time when, if nothing else, there was no shortage of punchers.

Who did Tyson not fight ?

    Bonecrusher was a huge puncher.
    Tucker was a huge puncher.
    Ruddock was a huge puncher.
    Bruno was a huge puncher.

Later in his career they did keep him away from good punchers with terrific chins such as Tua and Marcer because they may have survived to outwork and stop him but that was in the second and third stages of his career , mostly his post prison career ...
