Oh my god I forgot Willard

Archie Moore would smoke Willard. Badly outclass him

How can anyone see Willard and Carnera beating Moore? Archie hits hard is great defensively and is far too skilled and fast for them

Neither Carnera nor Willard possessed any skill they ain't beating Moore

Moore at his best was pretty amazing too

I don't think he beat schmeling anyways, just Sharkey

Schmeling is a class way above sharkey

As a defending champ Sharkey wasn't up to much, but I agree he was special on a good night. Against Carnera first time Jack was quite something. Schmeling was capable of greatness but so was Archie. Only Marcianos relentless pressure broke Archie down. For skill and power Archie at least matched Schmelling, although for conditioning Max against Stribliing was an iron man so you could be onto something..

Yes. The guy that was defeated by Jimmy Young. Quite possible. Perhaps you can debate the point starting with naming the best boxer Forenan defeated ?

If we take McGrain's stricter interpretation of the question, Big George was not champion when he succumbed to Young.

And worse, he was damaged goods, in the wake of Kinshasa.

Well it's too early in the morning to ponder it too much, but i'd start with Joe frazier or Ken Norton, both considerably better, h2h, than the Mongoose.

Thanks to all for the responses, the names proffered and the dearth of great heavyweights on them emphatically reinforce my position that Moore was not a great heavyweight.

Gentlemen you have made my case for me.:good:happy

Suze I don't think there is much to choose between Max and Sailor Jack on their best days. Max was just more consistant.

Hmm, Let's see.....A pressure fighter who wasn't as good as Archie Moore beat Johnson. His name was Marvin Hart.

Johnson does not do well vs. pressure fighters who can punch. He also had issues with fighters who can jab well as O'Brien did.

Moore has the power, jab, offensive skills, and reach edge in this match up!

Had Johnson fought neither Hart or O'Brien your bigoted @ss would be saying yeah right if someone suggested they could beat him. But he did. Look at the results.:deal

    Moore > Hart or O'Brien.

    Draw your own conclusions!

Well max schmeling on his best day destroyed the greatest heavyweight of all time. What did Sharkey do in his best day? Beat George Godfrey who might have tanked it?

Sharkey was beating Schmeling in their first fight until he went low, he was also giving Dempsey a pretty stiff argument , up until the controversial ending.
