It's a bummer when you can't respond directly isn't it? Holyfield would beat Moore up, him Walcott ,and Charles, he had too big a pair for Tyson ,Old Archie would be thrashed. Weasel replies from the Weasel, only to be expected.:yep
Not my position. Below is my opening response to the thread. Take a look at the comments I've highlighted in bold.
I still object because it implies he wouldn't be favored over... Baer, Braddock, Carnera, and Sharkey...all lineal,
He wouldn't be favoured by me over the Baer that beat Schmeling or the Sharkey that took Godfrey and Wills. What this thread has shown is that Moore ,who some have espoused as a great heavyweight is picked to beat surprisingly few heavyweight champions, and then only the lesser regarded ones. Which kind of emphasises that he was not a great heavyweight . Mission accomplished.
Okay fine. If you want to ad them to that list then do so. But my omitting them initially doesn't confirm your claim that I said Moore would never be a champion.. That simply was never said by me.
I think most posters here agreed Archie Moore would beat quite a few heavyweight champions I don't think Moore was a great heavyweight but he does crack my top 35 all time I favor Moore over Baer. Someone with such poor defense and fundamentals like Baer would fall right into moores traps all night and get outboard. Moore would see Baers loops coming from a mile away Sharkey Moore is 50-50 but Moore was far more consistent so he gets the nod
I guess that depends on what "great" means to you. I think top 35 rating is pretty fair. I think Moore falls short of the great Champions, but he is up there with the best men who fought for but never won the lineal title. I am a huge Baer apologists who rates him higher than most, and I don't see him beating Moore.
Schmeling couldn't beat Baer and I would pick the Uhlan to beat Moore, how about you? Moore was certainly more consistant that Sharkey, most were, but we are pre-supposing that all boxers are prime for these matches. I'm not sold on the idea that Moore's crossed arms defence would ward off Baer's overhand right . Moore isn't stopping Baer whereas Max has the capability to ko Archie and Baer carried his power late into fights. It's a close fight imo but I'll go with a top form Baer to catch Moore and stop him.
Schmeling could beat Baer. He just had an off night and Baer had his best night possible. Baer was very good that night no doubt. Schmeling did not let his hands go enough, he was off that night. Schming tried desperate to get a rematch with Baer Before the neusal schmeling fight, Ancil Hoffman, the manager of heavyweight champ Max Baer, received an offer of $100,000 to defend against the winner of the bout in Germany, Schmeling beats Baer in rematch Also you have to consider styles make fights. baer was tailor made for Moore . Moore feasted on big powerful crude 6'3 215lbers
Max schmeling would beat Archie Moore But schmeling was also a lot better than Baer and Sharkey Schmeling knocked out the greatest fighter of all time
I don't think there is much in it Sharkey was outboxing Schmeling when he went low.Schmeling was kod by Baer, so the results suggest parity to me. Schmeling knocked out a complacent, over confident Louis who spent more time on the golf course than in the gym for that fight.
