A heavyweight champion will have four fights in one year, 3 months apart, against: (1) Pierre Coetzer (2) Gerrie Coetzee (3) Kallie Knoetze (4) Corrie "Super Southpaw" Sanders EDIT: (5) and Francois Botha. Which heavyweight champions would you bet a lot of money on not losing a single fight in the series?
Quite a few, to be honest.* You might want to add in Du Plooy as well just for an extra challenge. *Well, at least a handful. Ali Foreman Tyson Lewis Sanders I feel would be the biggest hurdle to overcome, with Coetzee being troublesome as well. Gerrie was so inconsistent though, so it's hard to know which Coetzee would show up. Coetzer and Knoetze were at best fringe contenders and not a particularly challenging venture for top-shelf fighters. It also depends on the order of the fights. For example, fighting Sanders last might be a real problem for many, already having had three fights that year. An active fighter like Tyson would probably be okay because he was a very active champion anyway, but some others may struggle with the hectic schedule. Fighting possibly the best fighter last could maybe prove to be some fighter's undoing.
Sanders being the last on a 3 month routine would be the bogeyman, the guy was one of the most dangerous frontrunners the division's had. I wouldn't peg Lewis to make it through (Lennox also fought no southpaws) that gauntlet, and there's a chance Joe doesn't make it through, either. The balanced heavyweight greats with a chin (experience against Southpaws would help, too) would be my favorites. Guys like Holyfield and Vitali, I'd like.
Coetzee and Sanders were not bad fighters. Especially if they brought their 'A' game. But yes I think there are several Heavyweight Champions that could run the gauntlet all those South Africans were way too inconsistent.
Coetzee and Sanders were dangerous guys...Gerrie's best fight was against Dokes where he actually used his left hook (a Jackie McKay add) He still could have presented a dangerous fight for Holmes (styles) Sanders was another guy that had the 3X combo, southpaw X, Speed X, and sick power X, had he been able to jog before the Rahman fight he would have not winded so early but this guy was a fast starter and confusing speed and power and style Styles can get you past one of these guys but not easy, to get past 2 a lot harder
Yes. A major oversight. I'd been considering this thread for a while, and originally wanted to include him. Unfortunately, I forgot.
