    Thanks for posting this.

Do you know what New York had against Walcott that caused them to debate whether the first Louis fight should even be considered a title fight?

Was it just politics? Because I know there was a lot of hype around Louis possibly fighting Gus Lesnevich. Did New York want Louis-Lesnevich instead?

Was it a race issue? It doesn't make sense.

nookie not anymore than your ridiculous lack of boxing knowledge . Quarry beat 9 contenders ranked in that top ten when they fought, knocked out 5 (2 of those were ranked #1 in the world) few champs in any division has done that, course you would not know that.

How many times your hero Tyson lay down and play dead? how many contenders did he beat?

Wlad Klitschko according to another site went 15-2 at heavyweight not sure if correct. Sanders and Brewster were not rated when he lost and are not included. All ratings by Ring at time of bout.

    10/14/2000 – UD12 Chris Byrd (#8 at Heavyweight)
    12/07/2002 - RTD10 Jameel McCline (#6 at Heavyweight)
    09/24/2005 - UD12 Samuel Peter (#8 at Heavyweight)
    04/22/2006 - TKO7 Chris Byrd (#1 at Heavyweight)
    11/11/2006 - TKO7 Calvin Brock (#9 at Heavyweight)
    07/07/2007 - RTD6 Lamon Brewster (#8 at Heavyweight)
    02/23/2008 - UD12 Sultan Ibragimov (#6 at Heavyweight)
    07/12/2008 - KO11 Tony Thompson (#9 at Heavyweight)
    06/20/2009 - RTD9 Ruslan Chagaev (#3 at Heavyweight)
    03/20/2010 - KO12 Eddie Chambers (#3 at Heavyweight)
    07/02/2011 - UD12 David Haye (#2 at Heavyweight)
    07/07/2012 - TKO6 Tony Thompson (#10 at Heavyweight)
    10/05/2013 - UD12 Alexander Povetkin (Ring #1 at Heavyweight)
    11/15/2014 - KO5 Kubrat Pulev (Ring #1 Heavyweight)
    04/25/2015 - UD12 Bryant Jennings (Ring #5 Heavyweight)
    11/28/2015 - L12 Tyson Fury (Ring #3 at Heavyweight)
04/29/2017 - TKO by 11 Anthony Joshua (Ring #5 Heavyweight)

Maybe this is only as champion? Any chance Schulz and Barret were rated when they met? Either way great resume. 3 number 1 contenders would of been 4 (Haye) if not for Vitali

I would agree that it almost has to be Muhammad Ali, with Joe Louis right behind him. I think Evander Holyfield might be up there in that department, too. I would also assume that Wladimir Klitschko had quite a few, and possibly Lennox Lewis. Before 1924, the best Contender's lists I've seen is Matt Donnellon's yearly list, all the way back to 1880, so it might be interesting to look into that for earlier fighters. I would think it would be a gimme if somebody fought a yearly ranked opponent during the year in question.

I think Ezzard Charles is in the run for most ranked men in general. Don’t know about HW by itself.

Wasn't it great that a heavyweight champion would defend his title 4 or 5 times a year against top 10 fighters.

Hi Mostly Mike AND BROTHER IN LAW Middleweight Mike Nixon, NIxon was a taleted crazy guy who actually had street fights with Jerry! Course Mike also tangled with Dan Haggerty's body guards over a ex girlfriend WHO had been Daisy Dukes stunt double, I know a ton of their careers, knew all sisters some better than others . Brenda was my favorite.
and brothers , mother , never met Jack, he was hardly ever around. I'm also in Quarry's book "Hard Luck"

An interesting question is also who has the longest winning streak against top ten contenders. I once ordered a book: "The Boxing Register: International Boxing Hall of Fame Official Record Book" which was published 2011. Next to short bios of the HOFs the book shows their fight records + opponents who were HOFs, world champions or Top 10 rated at the respective time (but not the exact rank). Of course, The Ring's top 10 just started in the 1920s. Therefore, many of the old greats are not or just marginally taken into account.

If I counted correctly, Larry Holmes had defeated 18 top ten contenders in a row which is pretty awesome (debut to Michael Spinks I)
    - Joe Louis even 20 (between Schmeling I and Ezzard Charles)
    - Muhammad Ali 18 (debut to Frazier I)

    - Willie Pep 22 (between Sammy Angott and Sandy Saddler I. He had a draw with Jimmy McAllister who wasn't ranked though.)
    - SRR 17 (between a draw against Jose Basora and Randy Turpin I)
    - JCC 17 (debut to Pernell Whitaker)
    - Henry Armstrong 16 (between Tony Chavez I and Lou Ambers II)

I checked out some promising candidates. Willie Pep's run could be a record for the old fighters but I guess Floyd Mayweather Jr. has beaten even more Top 10's in a row.

    This should be remembered.
After winning the title in one year, he defended the title 4 times in the fights with the Top 10 Contenders.
That doesn't happen anymore. At least not in the heavyweight division.

There are some dark horses in this equation.

Jack Sharkey does pretty well out of this sort of analysis.

Guys like Turkey Tompson and Bob Satterfield fought an insane level of opposition, though of course they had a lot of losses to show for it.
