I'd always assumed that tyson was the better in this department with a great mix of speed and reflexes allowing him to slip punches up close.

However frazier in fotc demonstrated great defence by slipping and nullifying a lot of ali's best work.

I believe boxed ears has a clip demonstrating this feat by smoking.

I'm not saying neither of these are willie pep, i'm asking, simply, who had the better defence?

I think Tyson had the better defence. Frazier was very elusive though at his best. He could be hit, certainly, but he was hard to hit cleanly because his upper body never stayed in the same place for too long. Even fast punchers had trouble timing him.

Was supposed to post this thread in the classic.

I'm unsure myself, I don't think it's as clear cut as I previously thought :think

Tyson showed some mad skills at defense, as did Frazier. But Joe did it against a much more skilled bunch of opponents.

Mike tyson's defense looks better than it might have been but it was better than joe's imo, I assume this means talking about pre douglas mike rather than post version.
By the way luf, you barely seem to post in the general anymore compared to before, I usually liked your posts.

In terms of who got hit less!, or who utilized better technique to avoid punches? Cause the two dont go hand in hand imo. Mayweather gets hit less than Whitaker, but Whitaker was shorter and more aggressive than Mayweather.

Joe Frazier was a big puncher, Tyson was a huge puncher, so it was easier for Tyson to put people onto the defensive. Another thing.......Joe Frazier was always advancing foward whilst applying pressure cause he didn't have that kind of power, he broke you down by applying more pressure.

Look at Felix Trinidad, hardly ever took a real beating, yet he barely moved his head, moved back in straight lines when attacked, and was quite upright, but because he was such a huge puncher, no one could stay in range long enough to really punish him.

I believe huge punchers tend to take less punishment because its more dangerous the closer you get to them, not to say they have a great defense in terms of technical ability though. Look at Wlad, not exactly skilled defensively from a technical stand point, but disciplined, long enough, and a big enough puncher to keep his opponent where he wants them. Oscar Dela Hoya is another big puncher who didn't take much punishment over his career.

    Gotta' go with tyson.

Joe had great defense at times, and it's true he faced "much" more talented opponents. - but Joe also sometimes let his defense go, absorbing tons of punishment just to land a few big shots. Prime Tyson's defense was consistent, and so gets my vote.

Depends on what you're looking for.

Tyson's defense was better in short bursts. As the fight wore on, he often "forgot" it or used it less frequently. Frazier often got nailed in the early rounds, but he never stopped moving for the full 15.
