I agree that Thomas looked totally shot. In fact, he went from looking pretty good against Tyson to completely wasted against Holyfield less than a year later! I thought it was very sad to see actually. Thomas possessed great talent, durability and power (watch the Weaver one-punch KO), but cocaine destroyed his life. That vicious Tyson KO obviously didn't help him either. If i was in Thomas' corner, that fight would've been stopped before the 6th. Then again, it's easy to judge from your armchair.....

I think Thomas put in a very impressive performance against Tyson before being stopped. Definitely one of Tyson's best wins, perhaps the best fighter he beat too. I had Tyson ahead by just a single round by the time of the 6th. Thomas boxed well behind the jab and dealt with Tyson well up until that left hook landed and the accumulation of shots finished him.

Shame that Thomas was never to be the same fighter again, that defeat definitely ruined him to a big extent.

Okay, I'll reword - A prime 'heavyweight' Holyfield.

You cant tell me that the Holyfield that beat Foreman and Holmes was any better than the one that was beaten by Lewis?

Fiar enough though, his prime was at Cruiser

Holyfield has the better resume, Lennox Lewis has the more impressive wins.

    Yeah I cheated...sorry.

Whilst Thomas put in a decent performance against Tyson he was already past it...

    All 4 have good resumes...

Holmes has a lot of good fighters on there (you have to include Berbick if he's going on the Tyson list, but I'd take off Ali).

Tyson decimated his opponents but probably has the weakest set of challengers on there (and they were in the decline when he got to them - not massively but they were over the brow).

Holyfield fought everyone and gets my vote.

Lewis missed out on some or got them too far past it for them to be stellar wins but he too has a great CV.

    Lewis
    Holyfield
    Tyson
    Holmes

    Holmes last?
Yes, because he fought a long, long list of old never wases or yet-to-be's, and definitely did not fight everyone in his era.
David Bey? Ossie Ocassio? Marvis Frazier? Give me a break.

*Edit* Except for Ken Norton, who was still decent.

Tyson rates above Holyfield at HW, though. Simply a better and more dominant title reign despite the head-to-head edge to Evander when they actually fought (Evander might've beaten the '88 version too, though that'd definitely be less of a certainty).

Holyfield's overall career puts him ahead P4P.

Nobody went into the lions den more often than Lewis. And he was a road warrior, which is something you can't say about the other guys. He was matched up against the house fighter more than the other guys added up & I think if some of those other champs had worn those shoes, they'd have additional losses as well.

Holmes without a doubt. His record until his lost to Spinks is better than anyone elses. His number of title defenses, 20, is better than all but Joe Louis who defended 25 times. Behind his great left jab, he was dominant. His record after losing the title, against much younger men is very good.

Only Carl Williams could jab with Holmes, but he didn't have the heart to stand up to Holmes in the second half of their fight. If Williams had stood and battled Holmes , jab for jab, I think he would have won. Holmes looked bad until Williams gave up trying to win.

The reason Holmes does not get the credit he deserves is because people don't want to say the truth. He was better than Ali. He was Ali's sparring partner but he was better than Ali. Ali is boxings greatest icon but Holmes was a better boxer, had a better championship reign and a better record than all but Marciano. Holmes got his respect in the ring. Ali got a lot of his respect from ring side. Thats why Ali is beat up and shot and Holmes is not.

Witherspoon actually nullified the Holmes jab and jabbed evenly with him.
