They grow it in the Med and in the Americas. It is used to make tea, and you can basically use any part of it. I need to get my hands on it first though, and then need to see if it is better to use the bark or the leaves.
Sammichlaus from Schloss Eggenberg in Austria is coming in at 14-15% ABV, it is aged for 10 months prior to bottling.
As an American I've got to stick up for our beer and say point out that there are some great American breweries/microbreweries like Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, Anchor Steam, Abita, Red Rocks, etc, etc, but if you are going to toss Budweiser/Miller into the comparison, then forget it. But most American beer fans don't look at the mass produced beers as being quality anyway, so will resent being penalized for something they don't even take ownage of... Still though, Belgian beers are by far my favorite. Corsendonk, Chimay, Duvel, Gouden Carolus, Stella, Kwak... it goes on and on. I think overall you can't compare the quantity of great beer coming out of Europe to the quantity of good beer coming from the U.S. Europe by a landslide.
I would love to sample some of those beers. Sadly outside of the US it might be a little tough to get my hands on them.
Belgium loses points for Stella (originally Belgian), for the way it is ruining Duvel and gains points for Westvleferen. Italy's the up-and-coming brewing nation, and now has about the only decent mass produced lager in Peroni - and even that SabMiller are planning to cut back so it doesn't get a Stella-like reputation.
I used to like Bohemia, but lately its (the stuff we get in Texas) had a stronger alcohol taste and less of a beer taste to it. Negra is much smoother IMO. You prefer Bohemia?
Possibly. I think if it was aged with the bark, sort of like the Arrogant ******* Oak Ale, then you can get a nice finish that would smooth it out a bit.
I do like Coors and Miller and Bud is ok, but give me Budvar, Zyviec, Lech and Peroni over them anyday, Dutch brew some nice lagers, Im not a fan of the belgian and french lagers though. I love cider though, its taken over as my drink of choice lately, bottle of brothers or westons sweet or hell even woodpecker on hot day in a beer garden goes down a treat. Anyone tried Cisk, brewed in Malta i believe, now thats a nice lager!
European definately. Though I really do like Miller. Bud tastes horrible, Coors is ok. But definately European.
