Reason I ask is, I'm thinking back on all of Khan's knockdowns, how all of them were off shots to the temple.

Limond if I remember correctly landed an awkward shot to the top of his head, and Gomez threw a left hook which also landed on his temple. Then of course there was Prescott, who yes wobbled him with a jab to the jaw, but only seriously had him dancing with an initial left hook (I think?) to his temple.

I’m not in any way trying to justify Khan’s knockdowns, and defend his limited punch resistance. It just had me thinking, could those temple shots which rocked him and caused flash knockdowns (pre Prescott), exaggerated the china chin tag slightly?

*Please note, this thread in no way is suggesting Khan does not have a glass chin.

I think a shot to the temple messes up your equilibrium more and will make you feel dizzy and unable to stand up straight and balanced.

A shot to the chin just takes all your legs and knees away.

So would you say there's a difference in recovery time for both?

There's nerve endings in your jaw that, if impacted correctly will turn out the lights. A solid uppercut from a good puncher to a guy with an average chin will put him out.

Shots to the temple could disrupt balance but are less likely to flat out leave someone cold.

However, this is entirely subjective - it's completely dependent on the fighter.

I'm going with chin for a KO/KD. Temple shots are more damaging but getting hit right on the button will put you down every time.

Depends on the person really, some ppl have a strong jaw/chin, and others have a thick skull.
Then again getting caught flush by a shot on either with a Power shot will ko you either way.

Yes it definitely depends on the person.

i think a solid clean shot on the chin will most likely result to a KO. see pac vs hatton. But yeah, i agree to 3thirtheen it depends on the fighter though.

    Hmm interesting points guys, thanks.

Perhaps I should edit the original post, and include this bit on Khan. That'll definately invite more people to the discussion :)

It'll invite more people in, but you'll struggle to deal with the dickriding and the hate when it comes to getting an effective evaluation.
Against limond he got himself in an awful position, having bossed the round and got caught on the temple running backwards, and was in trouble from then on in the round.
The Gomez one was nothing more than a flash knockdown, he just didnt see the punch and it surprsied him.

KO's are mostly caused when a fighter's head gets snapped backwards because his neck and upper back can't stabilise his head. The brain moves around in the head. Too much movement (accumulation KO) or sudden, uncommon movement (flash KD). A lot of punches are absorbed in the neck so a temple shot can cause a KO if it snaps the head back by making the neck twist but it's easier done with a punch to the chin.

I got Kod once good temple shot and it was my last fight.Body toppled over forward like a Building and banged my head on the canvas. I could think, I could see move my eyes and look at what was going on but I couldnt move my body 20 seconds scared people. I was ok just mind got detached from my body.

I got hit in the chin very hard My whole body Froze over with a cold rush and I crumbled to the floor I faded into a dark tunnel came to on the count of 8 kind of didnt know were I was and got up on fighters instinct and continue to lose the fight.

A good Temple shot can end a fight
A good chin shot can send you to hell

    Cheers dude :good

What a lot of people forget in those fights, was that a green Khan showed impressive heart in recuperating, and getting up off the canvas to win by a knockout of his own

    Not an expert at all.
I picked temple shot because sometimes it doesn't even look that powerful and...down he goes...where some can take pretty hard shot to the chin without flinching.
Good shot to the temple always seem to make the knees buckle.

    Just an impression.

I've always had that thought too. I've seen guys with good chins wobble to simple temple shots
