( You may vote more than once or discuss )

Avoiding the best contenders while champion

Getting stopped early by a smaller fighter

Admitting to or alluding to a pre-arrangement in a boxing match

Being inactive in a fighters prime years

Hanging around too long, and making fans forget how good you are/were

Losing via DQ in a title fight

    Avoiding certain style types

Losing a match to a fighter who was over the hill or very green.

Good one. Add not testing clean as a professional.

    The three I chose were

    1. Avoiding the best challengers
    2. Being inactive
    3. Admitting to a fixed fight.

At least two of those can apply to Jack Dempsey.

Well admitting to fixed fights would be no1. Followed by being by avoiding challenges. Being inactive during ur prime years could work for your legacy depending on hiw good u are after them. Losing when ur past it dont mean **** eberbody loses.

I was hoping to avoid names for now. In this poll you can vote MORE THAN ONCE.

    Good call.

Too much is made of losing once in a while or struggling with a certain opponent. If you routinely face the best, this will happen sooner or later. Sitting on your ass and having fans writing on forums 90 years later how you'd probably beat the contenders you ducked anyway is much nicer of course, but doesn't make you into a great champion.

I think Hopkins, Wlad and Pac are model champions in that regard. They face what's out there. They've lost a couple, sure, but that's what happens if you face the best.

    Anton,

Please re-read it. I said losing a match to a fighter who was over the hill or very green. In other words the fighter lost to an old man or lost to a very green fighter that was new to the game.

I did not want to use names, but lets say you're a new fan of the sport, and only saw Roy Jones on the downside of his career.

Roy Jones stuck around too long, and IMO it diminished his legacy a bit.

You could say the same for Holyfield. This is what I mean by hanging around too long.

I think avoiding the best of your time is the biggest offense but some fighters have done this and have not been penalized legacy wise while others have.

I think any type of avoiding is bad, be it style or politics. An early loss has been overcome but always lingers and a fighter who fights on often leaves us with those memories when the weaknesses could be apparent but often as a fighter ages he learns survival skills

Yeah I just can't rate champions very high who go long periods of time without fighting anyone or those who routinely steer clear of the more dangerous opponents. That's not to say that a champion has to defend four times per year or face EVERY quality challenger with a heart beat. But there have been a number of champs I can think of who made a habit of padding their record or worse yet, not fighting anyone at all...
