Which was the best left hook in you're opinion? The one that dropped a still Cassius clay, the young contender.? Maybe or maybe not saved by the bell. Or the one that slammed in to Ali in the 15 th round by Joe Frazier. This one coming at the end of a gruelling fight, but Ali was never kd again, unless you count wepners??. Both famous punches for dropping iron chinned Ali but which was the best and most impressive?
Frazier's was more impressive both because of the punch and the fact that Ali recovered from it. Obviously any man can be knocked out but Ali makes that fact a little less obvious. I have to acknowledge the Wepner knock down if for no other reason it led to Rocky.
I would say coopers because it was the only punch that ever gave Ali a nosebleed. However, fraziers was obviously more memorable
Cooper's. If it had connected earlier in the round it would have been lights out! Indeed, it might have signaled the end anyway without the illegal smelling salts being used between rounds.
Frazier's because that version of Ali was much better. I did just recently watch that Cooper scrap- Cooper was whipping that hook with bad intentions. Clay at the time kept pulling straight back from punches and begging to eat some punches. Impressive, but that Ali was much easier to hit, and Cooper knew he just had to step in whip that hook, he kept at it until it worked. Still very impressive. Both surprising and dramatic.
The Frazier that beat Ali was arguably Frazier at his peak and his best performance. Cooper was a natural LHW and at HW had previously stopped by Zora Folley , Ingemar Johannson and Joe Bygraves. Cooper was outweighed by Ali by 20 lbs and Ali was 4 to 1 fav . So this basis Cooper left hook more impressive.
Coopers because when you hit a guy enough times hes bound to go down and it took Frazier 15 rnds to do it. This doesnt mean cooper can hook like Frazier bc Ali was harder to hurt in those Frazier fights but comparing the fights itself.Cooper put ali down early with limited punches landed while Frazier had to hit Ali with everything he had the entire fight which was a combination of fatigue as well.
It's got to be the Cooper punch, it had Ali in much more trouble despite getting up straight away after both shots.
I gotta go with this. When Cooper dropped Ali he was on ***** Street. You could tell the way he got up and went to his corner.. Literally another twenty seconds earlier and Ali would have been in the worst round of his life. With his head and legs gone and Cooper going all out for the kill you have to assume Ali may have been dropped again. Against Frazier, despite it being a war, he got back up and actually started throwing punches back at Joe. He certainly looked a lot more vulnerable against coops.
Another good one from you,Fergy. Hard to call, really. We could go with Cooper's as it was early in the bout and young Cassius was still fresh but Frazier's really came out of nowhere because both combatants were exhausted and I've said it before and I'll say it again - Only Joe could have found a punch like that at that partucular point in a fight and only Muhammad could have got up from it.
Gotta go with Henry's. Early in the fight and (Clay) was on q u e e r street. He even stood up and started walking to...NOWHERE after sitting on his stool. Had Joe tagged Ali with his LH early in the fight cleanly? Different story but Joe and Muhammad were both getting gassed at that point in the fight so the power of Joe's LH had, perhaps, diminished a tad by that point. Let's not forget the 11th round which may have been even more impressive.
He was well shook up in the 11th, though Ali did say I believe he tried to double bluff Frazier by over doing the wobble. But I think it was pretty obvious that he was hurt, another fighter with out Ali's chin and heart would have gone down in that round.
Tough call. Cooper caught him earlier in the fight and hurt him worse. Frazier managed to thrown and land a perfectly timed bomb that landed flush in the last round of an extremely grueling fight. I'll go with Frazier due to the circumstances.
