They tried to get DM and he did not want to leave germany. Benn would have a punchers chance but odds are that he gets outboxed dramatically. Calzaghe would have lost his greatest asset against Jones, his speed. He would get counterpunched freqeuntly. Joe is pretty hard to hit if he is fighting on the backfoot, not so if he is coming after you. Put it this way if Roy hit Joe with those uppercuts then Joe would have been in serious trouble. But Roy does not run away with it. Joe and Roy showed no intrest in fighting one another. :good Eubank never wanted it and said he would lose recently. DM would never have been able to deal with Roy's handspeed or movment. Also Collins? Have you seen him fight? He would have goten beaten up bad.
Fact is Jones avoided legit contenders. The question of who is better isnt relevent as this isnt a rip on RJJ, its a observation on the holes on a great boxer resume. Quality not disputed, choice of fights is. Lets not get defensive for Roy. Im sure he isnt crying right now, he's a big boy and he doesnt need our protecting. So, any other suggestions?
i think he was more avoided than avoiding the thing is these big time fighters are always used to getting the lions share of the purse. Against Roy he would require that they accept a much smaller share. Therefore wether he was ducking or not is entirely subjective as to wether you think he deserves more money than these opponents or not.
If not to get defensive, what other way would you like me to argue? The only person that you can say that Roy Jones legitimatly "ducked" is Steve Collins and he is crap. Roy did say in his interview before a fight, I think with Bryant. That he offerd: Benn, Eubank, Hopkins and some others and Hopkins was the only guy considering it and if you rememeber about that: "60/40 and a whoop you ass, 60/40 and I tear you ass up"
I love the boy but he did fight a ton of bums, no argument. I also reckon Benn had a far greater chance that previously expressed. Narrow minded fanboyism isnt that productive.
He did fight a number of guys that wernt upto it. But he fought like 10 top 10 guys/future-former World Champs and 3 ATG's. He was ducked because people knew that they would get beat down.
I honestly think that RJJ didn't dodge anyone during his prime. He actually talked about not wanting to hurt people. I mean he was that good in that he knew he would win. He was just worried about not letting his hands go too much because he was afraid of hurting people. After he destroyed Griffin in his rematch, he was interviewed by Merchant and he said the same thing. Merchant asked how come we don't see him fight aggressively like this all the time and he said he just didn't want to hurt people. He just wanted to win. And he was talking about how no one could stand up to his offense if he did let his hands go all the time. And i completely believe him. RJJ was amazing during his prime. And oh yeah, here's the link to the video if anyone is interested. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZmO2cxU8zs
Look at the shape he was in for that fight. He doesnt look like that now. Dont get me wrong, he looks great (better than Tito) but not the same.
and.... Look at the confidence he had in himself after that fight. He was like that all the time. He hasnt had that type of cinfidence since the Ruiz fight. He has a little now, but it's NOT the same. Man i miss the old Roy
He only said that to make himself look greater. He is the most self loving boxer of all time. He fought many bums and also some great fighters but they were done by the time he faced them. He avoided Hopkins with that dumb 60/40 I'll whoop your ass ****. He ducked him even though he had a win against him. Roy is the most over-rated boxer of all time. Sure he was fast as hell but he lacked boxing skills. Glad he got knocked the **** out by Tarver. The G-man would have beat him.
Bitched out of a Calzaghe fight. "60/40 and a whoop you ass, 60/40 and I'll tear your ass up" Roy Jones to Bernard Hopkins :hey
