So your knocking the Moore that Patterson fought just months after he was a terrific heavyweight dominating a division when he fought Marciano ? A bit of having it both ways SQ. :guitar

But Moore was fragile and could be taking out. Durelle IMO lacked polished finishing and a true KO punch. Someone like Spinks would not let him off the hook and probably find Moore with more regularity.

175 lb. champs that could beat Archie Moore of 1948 to 1958 in a time machine.?.?.?

    HMMMMM!!!

I'll pick Bob Foster, Mike Spinks and Royale Jones FO SHOW! And dude's like Richard "Big Dick" Tiger and Dwight M. Qawi would be live underdog's....

    Note:

Royale Jones of 2000 and 175 pounds would be too fast and savvy for the slower but more powerful Moore to catch---IMO!!

    A. It's my opinion Archie Moore was not mentally at his best vs Patterson. He was involved in a sex scandel, where he was being blackmailed. This is a fact. Archie said he went into the patterson fight not really right in his head.

    B. I do think Marciano took a bit out of Archie with that hellacious beating. Marciano was known to ruin many careers. Though he did not ruin Archie, I do believe he took something out of him. Archie did not display the same fast upperbody movement vs patterson in 56 that he showed again marciano/olsen in 55, vs Johnson in 54, vs valdes in 53. It made him a sitting duck.

    C. I would have liked to have seen Patterson rematch a more mentally stable Moore, or fight Archie of a few years younger. Might have been different.

    D. It was still a great win for Patterson.

    E. Archie did not fight Patterson "Months" after Marciano. He fought him a good 1 year and 3 months afterward.

Since most of the obvious picks have been made, the following might have a fair shot:

    Jack Dillon

    Jimmy Slatterey

    Maxie Rosenbloom

    John Henry Lewis

    Two outside long shots:

    Melio Bettina

    Tiger Jack Fox

Do people realize how great Archie Moore was? I mean, I can't see many of these fighters beating moore, that are listed.

The emphasis has shifted from "would pick to bet" to "might beat".

I appreciate your argument. I just think it's a stretch.

Patterson beat Moore faster and easier than Rocky did because of his superior speed. Moore proved an ability to rebound from terrible beatings and tough bouts through out his career. He did not get old over night after the Marciano fight. He was old for the Marciano fight. Patterson's speed exposed it easier than Marciano's grind it out style, that's all ... either way it still took special fighters to beat even that Moore. Archie was that smart, tricky, versitile and good.
