I don't think it's a given Robinson would beat Maxim in cooler circumstances. I've seen Maxim look a hell of a lot better and more active than what he was that night - as he said at the time, he didn't have an air conditioner in his corner either.

I would like to see him in with Billy Conn. But you'd need to be a sick ******* to want to see him in with Bob Foster or Ezzard Charles, Jesus.

I've heard speculation that they were BOTH supposed to lose the fight on points.

Probably bull****, but there you go.

I found it strange Robinson was the one who collapsed and not Maxim. Black fighters usually take to the heat better than white fighters. Although depending on what climiate each fighter was used to living in and fighting in as well throughout their careers.

Comes down to environmental effects and not skin colour; if a white bloke had been living in outback Nigeria he'd take the heat better than a black American. I should imagine.

Maxim usually does not get credit for the body punches which sapped Robinson in the later rounds.

Imagine what Tunney would have done with him.

I think that people should give Robinson's BOXING abiliity more credit, forget about how his jab looked, and check the effectiveness of it, he was able to shut guys out at times with that single punch, it wasnt technically great, probably due to what Sweet Pea stated- its low setting, but it worked brilliantly imo

I think it's a little silly to describe Walcott as a "former Maxim victim" when he won two of their three fights officially and won 6-3-1 on the AP scorecard in the one he "lost."

The low hand-positioning of Robinson's jab is definitely one of the reasons it was so dangerous. Robinson was near permeneantly "set" because of his otherworldly balance - front or backfoot - and that meant he could make some wonderful angles for this punch. Any tiny adjustments made to the hand position creates a different possibility for this punch in the lower position.

    Decent observation Teeto.

But as to the title of the thread - sure, he would be competitive with a lot of them, but does anyone actually pick Sugar to beat anyone in, say, their top 20 LHW list?

It's one of those matches about which people romanticize and cast one man as the "tragic hero" who was a victim of circumstance, I think.

It is a sore one though. The circumstances of the loss I mean.

Can you imagine what Foster would do to him? His life would be in danger...having said that, how do you think he would do with Billy Conn?

Only a good puncher, he's not stopping Sugar. He's outsped and done for footwork...and Greb is in the top twenty and Robinson has a good chance here, close to 50/50.
