Which middleweights from before the SMW division was created would have been great at 168?

Jake LaMotta was the first I thought of. He was a little too short for 175. He still had a rock of a chin. I think Super middleweight would have been just fine for him. Since Jake wasn't really a knockout puncher at least to the head I believe that his punches would still have effect. Jake LaMotta would have been a good super middleweight champion.

Ah, with all due love and respect, the question is wrong - or the answers are wrong.

The 5'8 Dick Tiger/Jake LaMotta don't need the SMW division. They need modern weightmaking timings and tactics. With a 24hr weigh in and diuretics etc. (not literally) these guys would be MW monsters.

The right question, if i may be so bold, is what LHWs would benefit from a 168lb division back in the day? And that, friends, is a terrifying prospect.

That said, Lloyd Marshall is the best answer IMO.

I think Lamotta in particular would benefit from the S Middle division.

    He'd be short.

All the 175lb guys above him would be boiling down.

Beat me to it. As soon as I read the thread, he and Mr Ruby Robert Fitsimmons entered my head.
