There are many greats from the past who don't impress more modern fans on film. Of course there are many reasons for this, lack of footage, past prime footage or poor quality film, but it cannot be denied some old timers had styles that would probably be less effective if they fought today.

Are there any great (or even just very good) fighters of the modern era who you think may not translate well on film for future fans born today for example? I know this is a tricky question as we don't know how boxing skills will develop and of course modern fighters have the benefit of a lot of quality footage but I thought I would throw this out there for discussion?

All of them will look impressive unless there are some crazy rule changes in the future. Most of the past ATGS not looking good is due to film. Once you get to the 30's and 40's when the film is good then they all look impressive.

Devon Haney and Shakur Stevenson have relatively boring styles. Even though they're undefeated and beat ranked opponents, if someone doesn't know what they're looking at they might dismiss them as uninteresting fighters.

Golovkin's career and footage will probably not age well given how much promoter's tried to portray him as this blood and guts slugger everyone was afraid of.

Ward is another guy who can look pretty ugly or boring on film sometimes.

Fury will be a very polarizing figure in the future due to the fact he missed so many names in his era and has some pretty ugly/boring fights such as Walli, Wladmir, Chisora, etc.

Interesting flip to this question being... Which past greats, do not look good in modern times?

I've become a fan of Tyson Fury since his third fight with Wilder, but I'm not sure just how great he will seem to future, young fans.

He needs to get a solid victory over the likes of Usyk, Ruiz, or Joshua. The two wins over Wilder were really impressive, but there's nothing else really notable on his record (I don't count old man Wlad).

I don't think Mike Tyson will stand the test of time well. There just won't be much admiration for his work cleaning up the division in the 80's. And what a dynamo he was, for awhile.

Instead, I think the younger people not alive or watching the sport will look at 90's and 200's stuff and say what's the big deal with this guy. The fights they saw him in he was no longer a dynamo.

And the size thing---a 5'10" guy like him and only 218. You know how that goes. But I think not fully appreciated for the terror he was at 1 time and just slaughtering guys.

Mike Tyson's peak was the 80's & he is still the most talked about Boxer even today by people born around the time he finally retired in my experience

He will stand the test of time very well, he didn't just win by KO but his style was exciting as hell & him being only 5'10 only adds to it as people watch him slaughter these giants on film

I know snooty self proclaimed sweet science appreciators might not like it but what the guy in the street most wants to see when he tunes in is a devastating KO that is achieved in an exciting way & that won't change a 100 or even a 1000 years from now because human nature doesn't fundamentally change

If he got his KO's the way Wladimir did then its a different matter

The guys who might not stand the test of time is safety first featherfist slicksters because as time passes who they fought & when they fought them will become increasingly alien to future generations just as for many of us today we don't know the context of many fights 100 years ago. Once the context is lost, all you have is a film of a guy who can't crack an egg clinching & potshotting his way to another boring UD win. On the other hand you can show film of a devastating Tyson knockout to some remote uncontacted tribe today or people 1000 years later & no words need to be uttered for them to understand what just happened on the film

I can definitely see dudes in 2080 using footage of Rolly Romero to prove how boxing's evolved

Trust me, Tyson's aura isn't going anywhere. If anything, younger generations hype him up more than modern boxers

Let's not forget the current # 1 HW was named by his dad after him & he went out of his way to pick Mike's last name as his son's first name just to make it clear who he was naming his son after as there are too many Mike's in the world

It's the opposite. If you polled Gen Zs on who was the better boxer Tyson or Ali? Tyson would likely win the poll 60-40 or 70-30. Tyson clips are still posted all over Instagram and Tik Tok, probably more than most current boxers. As for his size they view him as a giant killer who was knocking out 6'5" guys (who the opponent actually was doesn't seem to factor for anyone).

Tyson's style and image was custom made for today's short attention span culture. Want to watch a 15 round fight on your phone or a 1st round KO?

Tyson is much more popular now than the sad shell he was when he retired 20 years ago.

Tyson Fury doesn’t look good now, if for some reason he is considered a “great “.
