Nope, that was the best Hagler that he could've been AT that stage against an atg skilled fighter. It was a very close fight and Hagler never tamed him he closely out pointed him, zero room for an improvement. That fight likely stays the same throughout their careers imo..Hearns was a sharper harder puncher than Hagler, faster.. He always knocks Duran out !
Hagler fought tentative in the early rounds and started picking up the pace later on. He said in the post fight interview that he felt a little bit sluggish and couldn't get his shots off the way he wanted to and gave Duran credit for being faster than he expected but said he knows what to do in the rematch to knock him out. His trainer told him just to get the rounds in and win the fight. That wasn't the most ferocious, laser focused Hagler we've seen in the ring.
No your quite right it wasn't, to me he was visibly on the downside, Duran was also past prime. Haglers career reminds me of GGG's a little towards the end, the slowing down, but what made them great keeps them in the game kind of thing. Hagler took a beating in getting the win from Mugabe, a good puncher and a very good fighter, but Hagler wouldn't have had the same struggle 3/4 yrs before. I also think if Hagler had pushed earlier harder he would've been on empty later with Duran, he fought the best he could imo for that stage of his career, I wouldn't of expected him to ko Duran in the rematch !
Those saying, "Nobody could", are fanboys. Any fighter can knock down another fighter if they land just right.
Julian Jackson only ever ko'd 1 elite in Terry Norris, his powers real but good fighters took it and beat the living daylights out of him !
of course he could hurt him, he has to have been hurt with some of the shots hes took in his career, he can just take them, get through it, tough as ****, Jackson could hurt everyone, but could he take him off his feet, I don't think hes skilled enough, G's iq is too good, its not like Jackson dropped and ko'd everyone he hit flush anyways
Who cares? All I know is we have these two fighters at opposite ends of the chin spectrum At the top we have GGG whose chin is forged out of pure titanium and has never been dropped let alone stopped or KO'd And at the bottom we have Roid with his disgustingly feeble old lady glass jaw who has been brutally sparked out on 3 or 4 different continents. In fact, Roid's entire mandible section is made out of sparrow chick bone and even a toddler wearing 10 oz gloves could shatter it with a grazing blow.
Roy had the power to drop Golovkin. He was a legitimate KO puncher at 160. He stopped a guy who went the distance with Julian Jackson in 2 rounds.
