Pretty much. Scottish tennis players like Andy Murray are suddenly loved by the English now because they are British. Same with Ricky Burns.
He was born before 1983 when then law changed. "Before 1983, as a general rule British nationality could only be transmitted from the father through one generation only, and parents were required to be married." If his mother was British, I think she would have had to register him as British. He wouldn't have become British simply by being born in this country, I think. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_nationality_law#Before_1983
I don't. Just find it a bit strange that he would describe himself as English. But to each their own, as long as the English are find with it - he's got a good enough case.
Brits will take anything close to an ATG, no matter how muddied the nationality/ethnicity is, because they haven't really produced any.
36, old enough to remember him selling Earls Court a couple of years aftert turning pro. But keep going on about the ****in media by all means
Hmmm... no. A lot of the greatest people the world has produced were born and bred in Britain and were of bona fide British descent. Also, one thing you should know about the Brits: they are fair. They have no problem with people born in the UK claiming themselves to be something else. e.g. Calzaghe was calling himself the Italian Stallion and was supporting Italy against Wales. No one had a problem with that. British people still flew half-way around the world to support him.
Well, partially...yes! He could play basketball for South Africa if he had so wished. Like I said,i dont really wish to get into it,simply because I dont see what the big deal is. Essentially I dont see why any nation has the right to "claim" people. Lewis became champ on his own, it wasnt the people of Britain,Canada or Jamaica who got in the ring and won those fights. It was him,on his own who actually acheived what he did in his life, with help from other individuals like his family, training staff etc. Hes an individual, not a nationality.
what does the media have to do with it? 3 months ago the media would be telling you what a diamond geezer Jimmy Saville was.
That law is concerning people born outside Britain. So if you are born in Spain or something and have a British father then you could get British citizenship. If you're born in the UK you get it automatically.
