People are talking about how much Mayweather ate Cotto's left hand in their fight. Has he fought anybody else without a significant left? Is this really a weakness?
The only left hands I saw him eat was a jab, and even that didn't land as much as people made it out to be. He blocked Miguel's left hook pretty well. Judah, Corley, Hoya, Hatton, Corrales, and Mosley are all fighters that he faced with terrific left hands.
I'm going to have to say Cotto(e) used his left hand the best in their fight. No one else can time Floyd's right hand with the left hook, a punch that's generally useless against Floyd, the way Cotto(e) did.
Add Victor Ortiz to those already mentioned. Floyd has always been susceptible to the jab from the conventional stance. A straight left from the southpaw stance is different. Pacquiao could sneak some in, but he loads up for it and/or follows up with it after a lazy right jab. The person who caught Floyd with some nice straight lefts was Zab Judah, which Floyd later neutralized. IMO, Zab is more of a sniper than Pacquiao with that left. Pacquiao tends to sneak his in amidst combinations.
Yes it took 43 fights to fight someone with a decent left hand. Delahoya's jab and left hook were nowhere near as good as Cotto's
Cotto smacked him with several left hooks. He could have had more if he had thrown it after slipping the many right hands he ducked under. Instead, he would duck/slip the right, pop up in perfect position to throw the left hook...but not throw it. Was driving me crazy. Oscar had a better jab than Cotto and was successful with it against Floyd, also Oscar's left hook is legendary.
