Which of the ‘new’ divisions are essential, and which can we do without?

The days of the 8 weight classes have long gone. Today, we have a grand total of 17 divisions in boxing. It seems that if you gain half a pound you jump up a couple of divisions. Clearly, we do not need all these divisions, so which would you abolish? Alternatively, some of newer divisions are pretty essential to the safety of boxers today. Minimum weight, for example, allows talented smaller guys to flourish, without needing to fight at Flyweight against bangers who outweigh them by large margins (like Segura for example).

    So, of:
    Cruiserweight
    Super Middleweight
    Light Middleweight
    Light Welterweight
    Super Featherweight
    Super Bantamweight
    Super Flyweight
    Light Flyweight
    Minimum Weight

Which really add something to boxing? And which perhaps hinder the sport?

I’m a big fan of the 168 division, but in truth, I don’t think we really need it at all. Kessler (who has now moved up), Bute, Froch and to a lesser extent, Ward, all are pretty big guys, and would fit in amongst the best Light Heavyweights IMO. I’d also scrap Light Middle and Super Bantam.

As the weight decreases, I tend to see myself favouring the existence of the ‘*******’ divisions, as I believe it helps with the safety of boxers

Crusier stands out. I don't really have a problem with any of the others down to fly either.

I don't know enough about Oriental boxing to comment on the lowest divisions, its very easy for Europeans/ Yanks to just say get rid of them because they arnt relevant to us.

Agree with the Cruiser comment, lots of past legends probably would've been them now!

All these supers and lights just make it easier for fighters to claim multi weights.

To some people, Burns has equaled Sugar Ray Robinson's accomplishment of two weight champion.

LightFly is enough for the midgets. Get rid of straw. Get rid of super fly. Get rid of super bantam. Get rid of super bantam and super feather. The rest can stay.

Yeah just think, Louis, Dempsey, Tunney, Jack Johnson, Marciano, etc would ALL have been Cruisers. Obviously they would have stepped up to HW and dominated up there as well, which pretty much proves its a pointless division, unless you're a lazy Light Heavyweight. Or a ***** not willing to fight the big boys :good

Before these divisions came along Fly to Bantam was one of the harder moves to make up in weight. IIRC more fighters won world titles moving from Light to Welter than from Fly to Bantam.

Most of them wouldn't step up and dominate TODAY tough, especially not Johnson, Tunney, Dempsey and Marciano. In fact, giving them a day to weigh in pretty much all of The Rock's best opposition are cruisers anyway.

As of today, The Rock would probably be the best super middle or light heavy today.

To be honest you could easily go back to the original 8 plus Cruiser. To those fighting in between, it'd be easy to figure out what weight you're negotiating at until you're ready to cut/fight someone bigger than you for a title.

It should be nigh on impossible and daunting a task as possible. I have no problem anyone fighting at straw, or 122, but it when it's for a title it gripes me.

I dont necessarily think these smaller heavyweights would dominiate in today's division, but they would definitely be up their with the best contenders. The Klits aside (which they will be in a few years), I could see Dempsey and Rocky picking up a belt against the other contenders in today's division

That just isn't where I gauge 'success' from ;-) So I wasn't taking that into consideration :good

Lets ask another question. Historically, which are the best of these divisions, and which are the worst?
