You know the guys, the Greg Pages, Pinklon Larry Holmes Thomas’s and Jimmy Young’s etc Larry Donald is one, Byrd another… They’re not all obviously conscious impersonators nor overly similar but I’ll let you decide who is “Ali enough” for the question lol - Holmes and Tony Tubbs should go without saying of course.

EDIT: You don’t get to say Larry Holmes lol let’s have fun some here he’s the low hanging fruit.

Donald was the most convincing straight mimic that I've seen, although obviously not as good as the original.

Thomas may be your guy as far as actual effectiveness, but I'll wait for others to chime in.

I'll put my money on Byrd he's a tricky southpaw who's very hard to hit and he's a master of taking the jab away which Liston was pretty reliant on so I think it'll go similar to the Vitali fight with Liston quitting once he realizes he can't do much.

Someone underrated for his chin might’ve been Mr Donald. Never properly KO’d, fought really solidly. lacked strong competition earlier, his career never really overly took off. I can’t believe he just ate Bowe’s sucker punches the way he did, few instances where outside the ring shenanigan might apply a little lol.

I think he is probably the 2nd most likely or most likely as I’ve DQ’d Holmes. Byrd made people look stupid, Liston wasn’t really known for his boxing smarts and Byrd oddly would not have an opponent bigger than him, he’d be fighting a much slower guy roughly his own size.

    All day.

Liston was in 3 round shape in Miami. Inactivity coupled with Las Vegas aging Liston in dogyears. Page, Tillis, Tubbs, Pinklon Thomas, not Biggs though.

One of the venerable boxing trainers of all-time would disagree with your assessment of Liston's "boxing smarts."

“Sonny Liston was a great boxer. Lot of people never recognized that, because of his power, but Sonny really could box.” (Ray Arcel)

What makes one an Ali impersonator? Apparently it’s just being a pure boxer type?

If that’s all we need, my money is on Usyk to get it done. Boring answer, but Pinklon Thomas was already taken. And although Usyk hasn’t had a ton of fights at HW, the ones he’s had show he can deal with all types.

anyone say Jimmy Young? With fair judges, he might well stink his way to an ugly victory.

Hey I won’t pretend I’m smarter than Arcel but everybody has an opinion, I think he just wasn’t that good for a top guy. Liston wasn’t a bum or nothing he could box he was HW champ… but on a relative scale (I think he sucks H2H) that he couldn’t box impressively even for HW (the most shallow for skills division) the way say Louis, Sharkey or Holmes etc etc etc could and I don’t know if Arcel would disagree with that.

I’ll let you pick where to draw the line on Ali-ness it’s more of a vibe really, something you decide.

I don’t know about Pinklon, Weaver was tagging him to the chops a lot, really knocking the spit from his jowls, I’m uncertain about his defence but he had decent legs and SL had a hard time finding someone who used them… credibly PT didn’t go down and MW was a helluva hitter a guy like Liston, Shavers, Foreman a 60s-70s sized HW super puncher so there would be no early stoppage… I think if Liston had the condition to fight he’d wear Pink down over the long rounds, hurting him in spurts, killing his legs making him more stationary and hittable for a stoppage later 13-15 - it would be the better choice as he’s not quite as dynamic as Tyson and it’d be hard fought at his best 65-35 Liston for my 0.2$. HOWEVER I don’t think he has the condition here if it’s 64 Liston he was mostly a golfer at the time and aging badly, he’d have success I think with PT but I believe PT would outlast him and that lance like jab would take its toll on Liston softening him up all night and knocking the fight out of him bit by bit @Saintpat just how hard was Pinks jab compared to an average guy around yours and his size would you say? I read or heard he was a converted southpaw. How do you see PT fighting SL CT?
