I believe they were 4-1 and Liston around 7-1. Spinks was 10-1.

The Foreman fight was a big upset tho regardless of odds. Many people did indeed fear for Ali's safety.

Hence the infamous speech post-fight denouncing his renouncers.

I wasn't alive during the fight but my dad was and he always said, people thought that Ali could have been killed in the ring that night.

I've read some first hand accounts over the years and plenty did indeed fear greatly for him.

That was mainly because of what Foreman did to Ken Norton. Although being frightened for Muhammad's life was going way over the top. Both Frazier and Norton got blitzed but lived to tell the tale so why should n't Muhammad have done had he got beaten by Foreman?

Ali could take a LOT more than Norton and his fights against Frazier showed him to be a man who could never give up. He had also aged and was taking a lot more punishment than he did in the 60's.

I'd agree being frightened for his life was over the top perhaps but we see over the top opinions all day long in life and often from people you wouldn't expect them from........even experts.

I don't think that was so. This was before Joe Louis forged his legend. He was only a hotly tipped contender when Max beat him. A minor upset I would guess.
