Someone who is financially secure but still fights on for legacy Roy jones jnr Hopkins Toney Any others?
this the only answer! the older bros could fight until he is 60 because the division is so shitty! RJJ is ruining his legacy toney and Bhop just love to fight and are starting to ruin their rep!
Take Toney out of the list immediately. The guy has been nothing but a clown since moving up to the heavyweight division and is fighting in MMA next as far as I know. Jones Jr. Hopkins Morales Mosley V.Klitschko Glen Johnson Joel Casamayor Juan Manuel Marquez Barrera
'Financially secure' is the kicker. Plenty of over the hill, shot, past prime fighters still aiming for glory because they need the money, plain and simple.
I don't think either are fighting for legacy...they are still fighting because thats all they know, same with Holyfield. Jones Jr is wrecking his legacy, especially if he carries on still...normally I would think a boxer with his achievements had a secure legacy. But the difference in the guy in his prime to now is dramatic...and all these kids growing up watching this shadow of Jones Jr. Well thats the last thing he is going to be remembered for...being absolutely out of this world in his prime...but also an old man who couldn't retire.
I agree with you, but both Erik Morles and Marco Antonio Barrera want to be the first mexican to be a world champion in four different weight classes. I believe they are both shot and should just retire with their heads held hight. They both had HOF careers, nothing left to prove.
It's too close to call whether Toney & Hopkins are shot but they are obviously past their prime. As far as ruining legacies, I believe that's impossible. For example, yeah RJJ lost to Danny Green of all people but that doesn't get rid of his victories against Toney & Hopkins & Tarver. No way a fighter ruins their legacy(unless they take banned substances or use weapons, that brings about a cloud of suspicion). They can ruin their image to the eyes of fans but never their legacies. Wildboar9 said MAB & Erik so I'm going with that too.
If Roy retired at 48-1 after he beat Ruiz, then nobody would have questioned his chin, he would have been considered easily top 10 ATG, and nobody would have questioned his ability to beat Tarver, Green, Johnson, and anyone else he lost to. Now, since he's continued fighting and been beaten badly on occasions, people now mix those fights in with his glory days. It shouldn't diminish a fighter's legacy, but sadly it does.
Personally, I think he should've retired after the first fight with Tarver because it was a fight that truly showed his heart. If he retired before fighting Tarver the first time, many would question whether he's been tested or not. Im a Roy fan but his opposition in his prime wasn't as weak as people say it was, he just made them look like it he was beating good guys some of the times. I agree it shouldn't affect his legacy but time heals wounds, wait for years to go by and people should forget his losses to Glenn, Tarverx2, and Green.
