The uppercut is probably the most difficult punch to learn & execute, & also the riskiest to throw if you're not in ideal range.

Joe Gans took a time machine from 2005 back to 1893.

I don’t know if you want to call it the New Orleans style or the Miami 5th st gym style, but Ralph Dupas and Willie Pastrano adopted a box, hit and not be hit style while using the ring itself. This was adopted in a certain manner by Luis Rodriguez and a young Cassius Clay while all were enjoying their time together in the Dundee stable. And it moved on from there.

there will be a good few of course, but Joe Gans was the first I remember reading about, who seemed to stand apart with a Ring Craft & Mastery that wasn't found or seen among the mostly often, 'tough' & crude Prizefighting Era... Gans was certainly an early textbook on Boxing. They later said similar things of Jack Johnson and certainly by the mid late 20's more Athletic Stylist were becoming more widespread...

Tony Canzoneri was mentioned earlier, Film Footage of him was perhaps the first time I really was quite awed by the prowess, excellence & overall superiority of those early Boxing Decades leading up to the 1970s, that just sealed the deal for me, as these fighters did it every other week or so.

Be well, the times, they are a changing.
