It seems alot of people are saying the upper cut only in terms of pure power the upper cut due to its trajectory looses power as its travelling against gravity. One thing we should factor is does the human physique allows for more power from the different direction of the arms and torso, etc. In terms of a natural punch, I think the most natural punch of most people is the overhand, jab, straight , hook and overcut in that order.
Anything thrown by an undersized, but explosive little heavyweight against a bum, an old guy, a blown up light heavyweight,a wife, a beauty pageant contestant, or anybody else who doesn't fight back.
In terms of surprise or punches you don't see, how many out of lets say 100 punches in a round is a surprise punch?
Uppercut. Even if you ain't a big puncher, the natural motion of the punch snaps the head back if you land it perfectly.
Its the uppercut in my case for a few reasons. As a kid I never played sports. I picked up a love for reading from my dad and preffered reading to sports. When I graduated H.S. in 1990 I decided to join the Army infantry hoping to serve in Desert storm / shield. In basic I was a sorry sack o **** at first. I was 5'11 and weighed 185 pounds of unathletic ****. My first attempt to run 2 miles took me over 13 minutes but I never quit or have ever had any quit in me. I worked myself up to a respectable 12:05 2 miles and my best mile was somewhere around 5:15. Coming from someone that never ever played any sports I think I did ok. Left basic weighing 149. When I got out of the Army I landscaped and did roofing for years. When doing landscaping clean ups I could fill one of those big assed green barrels around 3/4 of the way up with dirt and rocks and curl it up to my shoulder and walk it into the woods. As a roofer my boss didnt believe in a power ladder to get the shingles from the ground to the roof...he had my dumb ass. a regular bundle of 20 yr shingles weighs approx 60 pounds and a bundle of the dimentionals 30 yr ones around 80-85 pounds. I would grab two and curl them up onto my left shoulder and climb the ladder, drop them off then do it again. I could do that all day and I weighed around 160 or 165 at the time. There was a huge guy that worked with me that could do three bundles it but that guy weighed a good 240 easy and was a weight lifter for years. I could get three bundles onto my shoulder and move them on the ground and he saw me doing it one day. Tried to bet me 100 bucks I clouldnt make it up the ladder with three bundles. I declined his offer and tried a practice run at home. I made it almost to the second story and ran outta gas. Unfortunately the bet was for a three story roof. I think I mighta pulled it off with some practice but for once I decided to smarten up and not risk hurting myself and let it slide. I also worked in a tree nursury for a time and we used to load up trucks to ship out to other nursuries or to big landscaping jobs by hand. I would grab the tree just above the dirt ball where its the roots and dirt wrapped in burlap and curl the trees up to my buddy who would stack them up. Those trees could be anywhere from 20 to 100 pounds. Well damn I got a bit side-tracked huh lol. Anyway I guess because of all of the curling type motions from those three jobs, for me personally my uppercut is by far my best punch. Sorry to have rambled on like that. I guess my second best would be my right hook and 3rd my straight right. My left arm hits like a little girl but I can snap a decent jab with it...thats all though.
anything thrown by this savage KO specialist: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACgTJhEdj5M[/ame] just devastating
I'm not up on Calzaghe's career, but if that passes for KO's then I don't know a thing about boxing. I did see him fight a couple times and he sure appeared a feather fisted arm puncher. Looks like the refs in many of the fights in this video had some Calzaghe money in their pockets before the fight. Some horrible stoppages in there for sure.
