Afu did a poor job....throughout the fight, and I think on both ends so, he was just bad. But Wright kind of added a controversy that didn't need to be there. A ref(in any sport) should not impose themselves beyond the point of their responsibilities....he picked the absolute worst time to do so. Poor judgment from a man who gets paid to have good judgment.
Afu was just intimidated by the crowd and tried to appease them by deductiong a BS point from Dirrell Reiss was kind of stuck in a hard position, Ward was using dirty tactics but nothing that blatant. Wright already had the fix in, Bute initiated most of all the holding but only warned Andrade for it, he also knew there was going to be no time left for ANdrade to capitalize on the knockdown but tried to find some say to stall some time for Bute to regain consciousness to allow him to stand up on his own for just 1 second. Notice how Wright never even looked at Bute after warning Andrade to go back to the neutral corner, it was as if he was in denial that Bute definetely could not go on and tried to ignore it.
Jack Reiss, good performance by Ward but allowing all of the cheating is just going to ruin the super 6. I don't even think Wright did anything wrong, Andrade was halfway across the ring and he told him to go back, neutral corner rule, it's been around since Dempsey-Tunney, we should know it by now.
Marlon Wright applied the rules correctly with regard to the end of the fight. Not his fault that internet fanboys don't know them. Other than that, his performance was fairly standard.
He wasn't saved by the bell. If the bell had rung at the end of three minutes, interupting the count while Bute was still on the floor, that would constitute being saved by the bell. You can't be saved by the bell, so Bute still had to get up. Once he did the fight was over. Do you need it explaining any more times?
