Well who knows, maybe his game wont transition so well in the pros. My friend fought beterbiev in the amateurs at world championship and was robbed by the judges. But Beterbiev is one tough mofo, and i like watching his fights.
who are these guys that beat Kovalev Alexandr Moskovskiy Ivan Reshetnikov Evgeniy Putilov they must be fuuking good to beat Kovalev man I wish more Russians would turn pro, they have a endless supply of top talent, I don't understand it if I was these guys and could fight like that I'd wanna turn pro and become a world champ and try to become rich. instead of retiring and becoming a policeman like Mekhonstev, etc. I take it the reason why Kovalev never medalled at the olympics or world championships is because he was never sent to them as there was always russians ahead of him
No idea. I just did a search for the results of those tournaments. There's no data for the some of the finals of the 2001 Russian Junior Championships but both Kovalev and Ivan Reshetnikov where the two winners of the 75kg semi-finals. It's a shame more of them don't turn pro. Mekhonstev was a beast, I've no doubt he would've done very well indeed in the pros. Yeah. I think he's improved a lot from the limited footage I've seen of him in the amateurs, all of one bout, against Korobov in the 2004 Russian nationals.
Beterbiev's style is very well suited to the pros, IMO. He might be easier to outbox than Kovalev but he's extremely strong, rugged, durable and he has sledgehammers for fists. If someone is routinely hurting, dropping and stopping their opponents in the amateurs, what's he going be able to do to them with those smaller gloves and no headgear on? 7:41 mark [yt]dB_NFPdtxpI[/yt] 4:51 mark [yt]t21bxE9Da3A[/yt]
The only thing that matters now is that Kovalev is going to knock out all the light heavyweight champions if any of them have the never to fight him. Hopkins refused to fight Kovalev and for good reason.
its funny, i was just thinking the other day, that with beterbiev's style, its very similar to kovalev, they are both always watching the target as they hit, they never turn away or flinch...this makes it much easier to hit the target if you can always see what you are punching at...i think that beterbiev has the bst chance to beat kovy at 175... stevenson is a good match for him but i think that his inside game is too much for stevenson who imo has a bad inside"brawl" game
Beterbiev stopped Rayco Saunders in 3 last night. It was the first time Saunders has been stopped in 10 years and 35 fights. Demolition. It was Beterbievs 2nd pro fight. He looks very, very good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=of6eZBWqCXk However- If you accept Kovalevs side of the story, one of the main reasons he turned pro was that after his trainer died he lost a number of fights (including Beterbiev and once to Korobov) in dodgy 'political' decisions as he didn't have a mentor with clout within the Russian am system.
I noted similarities in style: both heavy handed pressure fighters who throw a lot both up and down. Both quick, both accurate, though for me, Kovalev seems more fluid. Beterbiev is definitely one to watch, however.
yes exactly, i think the fact that we have not seen much of beterbiev means alot..i mean as we all know the pros and ams are 2 diff fights...but the fact that beterbiev just started pro and he is being put as first start in the big boxing galas, may make him nervous, with the crowd and lights and all..so he wants to make sure his performance is flawless....more waits to be seen, as i thin gym plan to launch his career on the fast track, kind of like stevenson, so he gets a title fight around the 20 win mark, they know beterbieve has loads of talent and hits hard, GYM has said in the past, with out going into much detail, that beterbiev has sparred with pascal, stevenson, alvarez, and one or 2 others, and they said he hits really hard and keeps them on their toes, he can test them and push them.. now they are already bigger names with alot more pro experience, but if he is already pushing them and testing their abilities in sparing, he has a great futur ahead of him...the only thing i would say is please oh please just dont take marc ramsay as a trainer...he is good, but very limited, he can only take a fighter so far and teach them so much....
