I was thinking about body punching and why it's no longer a main tactic used in breaking opponents down for many fighters. Is it simply because, for most fighters, 12 rounds isn't a long enough time to do sufficient damage to the body? Obviously the last three would be the hardest and if you've been pounded to the body and still have another 9 minutes, it's going to be telling, without question. With 15 rounds, it seems to me that a fighter can apply more strategy into his gameplan rather than simply trying to out-do an opponent in every area. Body punching is one of those, I think, but what else is there? How about, for example, Rocky Marciano punching the arms? Would it be as effective over 12 rounds? What other tactics have become obsolete?
When a fight went into the 13th round the commentators used to say, "Now we're entering the championship rounds..." Seeing as fighters today are so inactive I fail to see why 15 round fights couldn't return. I'm not actually sure on tactics which have become obsolete, but obviously a fighter had to have better stamina for the extra 3 rounds so body punching has possibly diminished somewhat.
even sugar ray robinson almost died from exhaustion in a 15 round bout lol... thats too hardcore for these new jacks imo but yeah... thumbing went out the window with thumbless gloves
Does anyone know what the last ever 15 round fight was? I've a slight thinking that it was Jorge Paez vs Calvin Grove and that it went the distance but I'm not 100% certain?
The tactics are still same there is just much less margin for error and you have to get started early. You could give away the first 5 rounds of 15 round fight and be okay, today that would be considered a massive hole. 12 round fights would presumably hurt a guy like Marciano. However in fights like Wolcott I, he also knew he had another 3 rounds so you have give him the benefit of the doubt. I imagine Marciano might be inclined to throw even more punches in shorter fights. Bottom line it is hard to see many fighters under 200lbs going the distance against a guy like Marciano, his infighting was the best ever at heavyweight.
in-fighting, fighters today keep alot more distance. infact i think referees even frown on this crucial part of the sport... i.e. mayweather vs hatton, mosely vs margarito. weather its benefits the sport or not im not to judge... but it has disapeared slightly. can you imagine the damage Bradley would do in-fighting with that noggin??? :!:
Idc about 15 rounds. I just think the rounds should be uneven instead of even. 13 rounds would be good. No draws and no bs split decisions. There will always be a clear winner. Unless there a point deuction or something neither way Tito/Oscar wouldn't have happened with 13 rounds. Alot of robbies wouldn't have.
I definitely see where your coming from, however I haven't seen any actually statistical data to say 12 round fights cause more draws. Knock downs, even rounds and point deductions can cause draws with uneven rounds, and those are not uncommon.
... like holding tight to the ropes between rounds 7 and 13 just to be able to survive to the last gong in rounds 14 and 15.
