Problem is Ali was landing nothing. The few clean counters Young was landing each round was the only scoring going on. Ali doesn't get credit for missing everything. That's good defense by Jimmy Young.
There was no special rules for this fight. The guy who lands more punches, controls the bout should have been winning those rounds. There was no point deducted from Young for diving his head outside the ropes a couple of times. That's Ali fans reaching in desperation to justify keeping the title.

The styles play a role in how fighters match up. Unlike Foreman, Joe was a precise, accurate, short puncher. Not easy to gauge. Frazier wouldnt let Jimmy stall and he wouldn't need to head hunt. 4 or 5 rounds of a Joe Frazier body assault would soften Young up. Then the head would be there in range.
That is not to say Jimmy Young wasn't a fine boxer though.

so he was a short accurate puncher. so what? I know he was a pressure fighter and that's all he did was specialize in crowding opponents. it worked with Jerry Quarry, Ellis, and Foster but were any of them as slippery as Jimmy? Doesnt look like it. avoiding Frazier's one lone weapon, a periodic sweeping left hook and an even more rare right hand, does not seem like a daunting challenge to Jimmy Young, after defeating the like of Ron Lyle, George Foreman, Richard Dunn, and Ali. the loss to Norton was very close and could have gone Jimmy's way

This is what I think of the comparisons between Foreman and Frazier!

He's not on the list but I think Frazier vs Vitali would be an interesting fight. 2 Fighters built completely differently, with completely different styles. I always like those kind of matchups.

This is the dumbest thing I've ever seen. ETM said "The styles play a role in how fighters match up." Just because Foreman beat Frazier because of the styles match-up does not mean, Young would automatically do the same just because he beat Foreman.

Young beat Foreman who decimated Norton, so Young would be a lock against Norton right?

Absolutely astounded by the stupidity of this comment.

Plain as day he was not the same fighter. I honestly can't see anyone saying otherwise unless they have an agenda.

To me Fury would have been chopped down by Frazier, and Frazier was a far better finisher (not to mention boxer) than Wilder. Fury would go down in 11 and that would be the end. He'd do far better overall than the hulking Mathis if course, but to me Tyson would be great for guys like Frazier and perhaps even Ken Norton.

Definitely not the same fighter but DAMN I thought he looked SO good in those early rounds. I don't think anyone else could have beat Ali at the time, for sure.

To compare Frazier of Ali II to Ali of Spinks is ludicrous.

not really. Frazier had but one weapon, a sweeping left hook compared with Norton, & Foreman both of who comes with left jabs, right crosses, uppercuts, hooks

That gave Jimmy more to worry about and if you got only one offensive weapon to work with against a defensive wizard like Jimmy, that can spell big trouble

Jimmy was much more successful against the top heavyweights of the 70s than Frazier

If you think Frazier only had the left hook, I suggest you actually watch footage of him instead of sprouting unsubstantiated myths.

    lol.
