No pure boxer ....if you can’t punch then you can’t beat Thomas Hearns

    147 Robinson, Leonard
154 McCallum possibly, but I doubt it
160 Golovkin, Toney, Jones possibly, Hopkins possibly, Michael Nunn possibly
    168 Toney, Calzaghe, Jones
175 Spinks, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Charles, Moore, Kovalev, Mustafa Muhammad, Saad Muhammad so many more

Qawi, who is underrated as a technical boxer.

That’s an absurd suggestion. It is not possible for him to strictly out-box Tommy. Especially considering how heavily reliant his boxing was on his short man’s up-jab. He’d probably knock Tommy out eventually, but he ain’t getting the better of the jabbing/fencing exchanges.

It’s only absurd if you have an unduly narrow understanding of what it means to “outbox” someone. I could see Qawi expertly slipping and blocking Hearns’ punches and nailing him with hard counters. That’s “outboxing” someone in my book.

Agreed ... and I never can understand why so many people say Hearns "outboxed" Leonard in their first go .. I mean the fight was for 15 rounds , not 12 . Leonard closing the distance, going to the body , then upstairs , landing big powerful shots ,,, combo's and everything ... and TKO's Tommy in 14 ... That isn't boxing??? Who cares if he was behind on the cards ... he took what Tommy had to give and then attacked ... thats isnt boxing??? Leonard TKO 14 ... who outboxed who??

Yep. You’re right. It’s a boxing match after all. Whoever wins is the better boxer. No need to read through the posts or actually attempt to answer what the guy who asked a specific question was looking for. A win’s a win! Great thread. You guys have really contributed.

Hopkins seems the man for the job on paper...he had that right hand...he outboxed an incredible list.

Pure boxing chess match style Hagler had the reflexes and tools to outbox him rather than steamroller him...

Leonard got lucky, he wasn`t landing much of anything then hurt Hearns mid fight then hurt him again a few rounds later, he was being soundly out-boxed before tagging Hearns.

Calzaghe, Charles and Kovalev would have landed a lot of punches from the outside v Tommy and all three would have beaten him.

Hearns boxed badly v Ray Leonard and Kitchen at 168, Hopkins, Calzaghe and Ward would have out-boxed him at 168 on that kind of form.

Ray Robinson was a master at everything so may have out-boxed Hearns, it would have been an awesome fight at 147 or 160.

Charles? Ezzard Charles? Yes. Calzaghe? No.. Joe was great, but speedwise and jab? Hearns would have won that. Southpaw might have caused a problem. And Kovalev? He should not even be considered. I honestly think Kovalev was a little overrated in his career. He fell apart more than he should have in a short amount of time. The fact is Ward figured him out in the second fight and sort of outclassed him.
