This two minute section from The Thrilla in Manila Documentary below (which is timestamped so it starts at the right place) clearly shows that Frazier genuinely hated Ali.

It seemed to start in the build up to the FOTC and Frazier later saw Manila as his final opportunity to get revenge on Ali but then had to deal with the frustration of losing to the man he wanted to punish the most plus the perception that he was robbed of victory when Futch wouldn't let him out for the 15th round.

I think this only intensified over time as Ali lived rent free in Frazier's head, feeding the hatred even further.

I remember reading that some guy was on a long distance car journey with Frazier, who talked about Ali the whole way there and the whole way back and this was many years, if not decades, after Frazier's retirement.

On the other hand, I always got the impression that Ali genuinely liked Frazier (he even said so in the build-up to Manila) but he was also intimidated by him and saw the insults as a way of getting under Frazier's skin and giving himself a psychological edge.
However, he took it too far.
