Which two fighters hated eachother most in boxing history ?

Carlos Monzon and Rodrigo Valdes, they met twice, June 26 1976 for the undisputed World Middleweight title, Valdes knocked down in round 14, loses a unanimous 15 round decision. Then on July 30 1977 in Monzon's last and 14 th title defense, Monzon decked in round 2, but gets up to win a unanimous 15 round decision. Monzon retires as champion on August 29 1977.

Ali and Frazier.

 

Carlos Monzon seemed level to his opposition. He respected and befriended Briscoe and didn’t seem outwardly arrogant towards guys. Nino called Monzon a homo and pinched his ar$e then and there he declared to murder Nino. “Tonight you die” It was the only time I can think of where Monzon was getting “rattled” the beating certainly seemed “emotionally invested”.

I cannot remember anyone saying anything positive about Lennox Lewis' personality, ever. He always seemed like a good dude to me, I wonder why he's so intensely disliked? I've never heard him say anything seriously bad either to his opponents, or anyone else.

 

Why? Was it how he treated him?

 

I will offer two old cases for the discussion. Please correct me if I am wrong stating the facts.
In both cases it seems it was more the political environment driving the animosity than any personal issue.

Louis vs Schmeling.
The defeat of Louis in the first fight was proclaimed by Nazi Germany as proof of "White Man superiority" over "lesser races" and a symbolic triumph of National socialism over a weakling democracy. You can just imagine how humiliated and frustrated Louis felt knowing that he let his country and his race down.

IIRC Louis once declared his 2nd bout with Schmeling was the only time he went to the ring wanting to hurt his opponent badly. He even confided to a friend that he was afraid he could accidentally kill Schmeling.

Paradoxically. Louis and Schmeling developed a great friendship later and stayed in touch until death. Schmeling even paid for Louis' funeral so his former opponent could have a decent burial.

Ali vs Patterson
By the time they were set to fight, all hell had already broken surrounding Ali conversion to Islam, denouncement of racism in America and opposition to the Vietnam War. Patterson assumed it would be a great idea to exploit the contrast between the "good American" (him) and the "renegade" (Ali).

Thus, Patterson went to work refusing to use "Ali" to address him, using "Casius Clay" instead, declaring it was a disgrace the HW champion was a black Muslim and saying he was going to take the championship "back to America".

Now, who in the @@@ heck would be so insane as to provoke Ali? Patterson must have had a death wish.

As you could expect, a very pissed off Ali went to the fight with the mission of hurting Patterson as badly as possible. And sure he did. Patterson was the target of a grueling and long beating for the ages.

Ali even admitted he could have knocked out Patterson quickly and early, sparing him further damage. Instead Ali deliberately and methodically kept toying with Patterson, torturing him through 12 rounds of pure hell until the referee stopped the beating out of mercy.

 

They speak highly of him now …Holyfield said in an interview after their second fight that Lennox Lewis is the only fighter that he personally disliked….keep in mind this after Mike Tyson bit off a piece of his ear

Benn v Eubank springs immediately to mind... along with Eubank and Watson.

Mark Kaylor and Errol Christie had a lot of bad blood.... and it went off between them a few times leading up to the fight.

There's still no love lost between Groves and Degale which stems as far back as there amateur days.

Bellew and Cleverly had a cracking first fight however the rematch was ****ing horrendous. I'm aware they both still aren't a fan of one another.

I think Larry Holmes said that Marvin Hagler personally disliked every opponent that he fought, even after the fight was over. I knew he had a grudge against Leonard for many years.
