Which "undefeateds" were groomed for the express purpose of cashing out on a loss?

That emoticon wasn't meant to signify doubt, more like "Huh, I hadn't thought of it like that...interesting..." :good

prime example ... perez tht fought gamboa saturday ... unbeaten record against absolutely dire opposition , i think there were 5 with winning records , and then he fought as if he was cashing out lol , alot of the legends sons seem to be built on there fathers rep and fight bums until a money fight ....ie ,ronald hearns , chavez jr , marvis frazier , aaron pryor jnr , etc lol ... george foreman the 5th is still unbeaten also ... although tbf chavez won a belt and beat some decent fighters .and does seem to have the old mans beard

Funny as it is to mention Lacy now, he was expected to blow Calzaghe out in that fight. At least by the U.S. boxing press. The betting trend started at even money and ended up with Lacy as the favorite as well, despite being the road fighter.

Says more about hype and groupthink than anything :good

Gary "The Rocket" Lockett comes to mind, since he's the talk of the town on ESB these days.

    The financials don't work:

It would take probably between a quarter of a million and half a million --- MINIMUM -- to run a fighter's record to 25-0 and get him a title shot.

The only way that works is if the guy is a real draw fighting at home, filling up arenas to generate that money. Otherwise, the payday would be less than the investment to get him the payday.

And, yes, someone could run a 25-0 record for less money -- but it would start with the fighter and the manager not getting paid at all, so all the money went to opponents. One could do it cheaper, but probably not as cheaply as you think, fighting "bums" -- but that doesn't usually get one a title shot. And even bums expect to get paid when fighting someone when the 'built-up' guy gets to be 15-0, 20-0, etc.

Someone mentioned Pianeta -- besides paying him, how much do you think Oliver McCall, Zach Page and Frans Botha received to go over there and fight him? Add several thousand per fight to that to fly over the fighter, the cornermen, hotels, food, etc. And probably some training expense on top of that. I'd bet those three fights alone, without paying Pianeta, probably cost close to six figures to the promoter. And assuming Pianeta got paid, double it.

That doesn't even count the 26 other fights -- the ones on the way up were cheaper, but it adds up pretty quickly after about the 15th fight.

Of course, if the guy being built up slips up (loses on a cut to one of those bums, gets caught, gets robbed, loses by TKO due to injury, etc), then all of that investment money goes up in smoke. And if the big-money title fight does come, one would presume that the promoter would first get his investment back, plus a profit, plus interest (over the years that it took to build the guy and his record up) ... all before the boxer and manager got a share.

    It just doesn't add up.

Good call on pianeta n charr......except pianeta beat 2 Former world champs...More than
Either cooney or Grant can claim n charr is still a very live dog n the hw landscape.

could the same be said about Bean Mavrovic or stewart????

Its easy to pick apart the current champs unheralded defenses . but they're still waaaaaay better than many of the absolutely bums former champs faced.
