The thread asked for paper titles as well, pretty simple request.

Completely agree the more widespread they have got the worse we are off. Even two was ok looking back now, wold have been fine if only unifications were easier to make. Holmes - Weaver, Sanchez - Pedroza, Chandler - Pintor and the like would have been great added to SRL - Hearns and Spinks - Braxton.Even with two there were some serious reputations forged within the same division at the same time as evidenced by my examples.

Ali-Liston. it wasn't just just the Cooper near disaster. He'd had a squeaker the fight before that one against blown-up lightheavy Doug Jones. Clay's most significant win had been over 50yo Archie.
He went into the Liston fight as a skittish kid who didn't sit down on his punches and left it as one tough SOB.
Sonny said in his room afterwards "that wasn't the guy I was supposed to fight. That guy could hit".
No other fighter ever enhanced his rep among the boxing community in winning the heavyweight title (honorable mention Buster Douglas). In the TV commentary Joe Louis calls the first round the finest round of heavyweight boxing he's ever seen. And it's Clay he's talking about. A truly astonishing performance.
And since no one seems to have mentioned it, let me also add Walcott-Charles 3. That knockout is still my all time fave!

    Barry Tompkins is the man!

I STILL haven't seen the Harry Carpenter commentating version of Tyson-Bruno I. Been dying to hear the excitement 'Arry jarred up in that 1st round.

    Good stuff Fergy!

I think you've asked one of the most thought provoking questions on this forum...On the night a heavyweight wins the title, generally he is at his very best, and ready to perform...While Tyson can't be called the greatest...I think the night he won the lineal title from Michael Spinks he was powerful, but his speed and defense were so spot on...he was the perfect fighting machine. Tyson KO1 Spinks for me...It was flawless.

Ali-Liston 1. No one gave him a chance. Ali superbly outboxed and stopped the champion.

Watch how Ali's legs alone carry him out of trouble again and again.

Roy Jones . Just for the historical perspective. He did what nobody had
done in 106 years in becoming first former mw champion winning the
    the hw title.

I'm with you totally on the numerous amounts of belts in the sport. It would be so much better if were just one main belt or like Jt says at a push two. But in the last 30 odd year s some of the greats have held different belts at some point or another. We can't rule out certain great fight s because they held more than one belt or a specific one. Even going back to holmes he at one point had the wbc picked up the IBF. Tyson, bowe, Lewis, foreman, klitschko have all held different versions of em.
I'm a fan of the lineal title, the man who beat the man, but just to have specified that would have ruled out great fights. Tyson v Bruno 2 for example. If it was lineal alone that would possibly leave out some great fight s

Another one I particularly like is angie Dundee shouting at leonard' you're blowing it kid, your blowing it! 'in between rounds of the hearns fight. Leonard staring out with his eye closed up. And then roaring out to catch Tommy and stop him!. It's things like this that sometimes adds excitement to the fight. Can remember tyson fighting pinklon, and coming back to the corner and saying to rooney 'getting tired'. Not sure If tyson meant he was getting tired or pinklon was.? But great little moment s I can remember from the 80 s era.
