Liston, retired on his stool claiming a "shoulder injury" or something similar.
(Scores were close at that stage of the fight)

Duran "no mas"-ed it during the fight.
(Scores were close at that stage of the fight)

Both "Bad Dudes" bailing out, when the going got tough.

Disagree strongly.....Liston's at the time was far worse....this was unprecedented handing over a title especially the heavyweight title

Liston no doubt. He gave up sitting on his stool the greatest prize in all of sports the worlds hwt boxing championship.

I guess the WBC Welterweight title means nothing then. I would say Duran quitting was worse. Liston was past his peak. He could of been 40 by that time. Who knows he hurt his shoulder throwing wild punches or not. There is no proof either way. Duran on the other hand just quit in the middle of the round because he knew he was going to lose eventually.

yes at the time, but the "no mas' is still talked about today and Liston has been forgotten which is a shame.

Duran easily imo. Liston was being beaten and he knew after all his tactics failed he had no chance of winning, and his shoulder could have very well been messed up. Duran, had already had a decision win over Leonard, but things weren't going the way he wanted the second time around so he literally threw up his hands and quit. No Mas is still a thing today, in pop culture and everywhere else, Liston is omly remembered by non boxing folks (maybe) for being the guy that 22 year old Ali beat for the title the first time.

Duran quitting definitely. He'd already defeated Leonard not long before in one of the greatest performances of all time.

Well unless you believe Liston really had a shoulder injury I would say that they were similar except Duran was more honest about it. If Liston faked or exaggerated an injury how is that better than just admitting your done? It`s quitting either way.

You have no way of knowing if he faked an injury for starters.

Liston wasn't being beat. It was even on the scorecard.

Liston was getting peppered pretty bad by Ali. He was hurt a couple of times and he was also cut.

Yet the scorecard was even. Getting peppered by punches and losing on the scorecards are 2 different things. I think Liston probably realized he didn't really train hard and quit because he knew he was slowing down and he didn't want to "lose" by stoppage to somebody like Ali who he didn't respect. Or he could of actually injured his arm. Who knows.
