None, that's how boxers make their money. Especially the lower weight classes. Too many fighters from a round the world are too small to make the bigger weight classes. They get paid peanuts and aren't even aired on TV. I think the weight classes that get the most air time (147-Heavyweight) are appropriately competitive. My only problem with those weight classes are the belts and promoters. Having watched for a long time I've also seen fighters get stuck in between weight classes. Ex: Gatti at the end of his career, too small for 147, too big for 140.
Plus scrap the WBO. Merge the IBF and WBA. We only need max 2 boxing bodies. Also cut number of pros from over 1,000 in each weight class.
They should abolish the day before weigh in system instead, which was mostly brought in to help TV channels/ companies. Nearly everyone would change division though lol.
Agreed. If there was only one belt per weight , there would be far less nonsense with "ducking" "a-side b-side" etc... Legitimate contenders would be harder to "strategically" overlook or ignore and we'd end up with a much bigger chance of the best fighting the best at a point when those fights would be still relevant
Abolish all the piffling little divisions at the lower end of the spectrum, and cap HW at 250lbs to eliminate all the fatties and freaks.
He's just upset because his boyfriend Bellew got spanked by Usyk and the iron-chinned power puncher Dorticos knocked out Tabiti
Funny thing is that some in the MMA community are actually pushing for more weight classes. Luckily UFC and the other orgs are not making that mistake. What should stay are the classics: 112, 118, 126, 135, 147, 160, 175, 200 and 200+. Maybe keep the 105lb division. The talent there is sparse but they can stand on their own. And some guys just are that small. And maybe do something with Cruiserweight. Maybe add a new division at 220... I dont know. But these stupid super and junior filler divisions need to be eliminated.
140 and 154. Nobody really campaignes at these divisions for the long haul. It’s hard to care about a title when you know it’s getting scrapped the second a fighter finally decides to move up to the real division.
I would definitely get rid of 140 and 154 as history has shown that they’re not much different from 147 and 160.. It really just becomes a cheap way for guys to become 2 division champs or allow guys to stay way from tougher guys..
This. Merge all them WBCs IBF, UBMe,IBeU, UMEWEE, WXZ etc ,etc into a maximum of 2 boxing council/org - no more no less!
The 2 lowest weightclasses (105/108) have less active fighters in them together as the next lowest (115). I'd say cut those and make 112 (flyweight) the minimum, and get rid of all Super and Light versions except Light Heavyweight (175). Sadly that, and certainly merging alphabet organisations (like some mention) would never happen, because that would cost all of them money, control and influence.
This will never happen but I’d like to see them go back to the original 8 plus cruiserweight...but make cruiserweight 190, and then add a super cruiserweight division at 210 or 215. Then obviously heavyweight would just be anything above 210 or 215.
I think junior/super weight classes are there for a reason. Maybe in the past where the sport hasn't big as big as today, it's not really significant. But nowadays, with current level of competition, training method, strategy and techniques, 1-2 pounds can really make difference. Take Featherweight and Lightweight for example. Without a middle weightclass between them (the junior lightweight / super featherweight), the gap would be so big and many boxers who will be victim of being 'trapped' inside (too big for lower class, but too small for next class).
