It depends on the division. It is almost impossible for a speedy fighter who lacks power to make it at heavyweight. But a light-hitting fighter like the magic man can be successful in a lower weight class.

As is universal in sports, SPEED KILLS.

As I've said before, I think a lot of guys with speed get screwed up in the amateurs because of the point scoring system and just don't learn to use their speed properly. No leverage or follow through. They learn to throw just 'far enough' to 'tag' the opponent and are already thinking about retrieving the punch to throw for the next 'point score'.

And then on the flip side you have someone like Tyson who trained to kill, flat out. He was fast in training and fast in fights. I think it's got less to do with the Am's and more with their philosophy of boxing and how serious they are. It's getting a lil tangental I think...?

I have both but if I would have to choose between the two it would be speed. It's usually the perfectly-timed punches you don't see that hurt the most. It's great to have both because you can move around but have your opponents respect your power so that they don't come rushing in trying to knock your head off.

It made him a world champion and that is what it is all about. I would go with speed and when I acclomplished all that I wanted, then I would get out of the game. True, speed diminishes and power always stays with you.

You can get caught up trying to maximize your amateur career at the expense of learning a more 'pro' style. Depends on your goals. I just think too many of the speed guys aren't looking far enough ahead to the pros. An Olympic gold can translate pretty damned fast into pro money but will only take you so far..... You get a guy in their that is trying to hurt you, not score points, and it is a whole new sport.

That was the difference between Tyson and the other amateurs. He came to kill and they all avoided him like the plague!

Speed. That's usually what separates the "elite" from everyone else.
