I stand corrected. However, under any unambigious/clear-cut criteria Jones is better.

I disagree. Whitaker has the deeper resume. At the top, Jones has him. But after than, Whitaker's resume is far deeper. Was he the better fighter? No idea..

I read your criteria. I don't see anything clear cut about it. You are putting emphasis on KO's and win %, but not on who they beat and what actually happened in the fights.

Other than winning fights and knocking out his opponents, what do you expect of a great boxer?

I don't care about KO's. That tells me he is a great puncher. Some of the greatest fighters ever had low KO percentages. And going by that criteria will land us in some interesting debates. Do you rate Marciano as the greatest ever HW? Do you rate Mayweather as the best of all time or near it? I don't on either count. But if you rate Marciano on his record and KO's, it's easy to make an argument he is better than Louis and Ali.

Whitaker holds titles in four divisions and so does Jones. If Jones would win at cruiser. It'd been five.

Here's a criteria to think about:

Whitaker faced 5 fighters (in 6 fights) that were ranked top 10 p4p at the time he fought them.

Julio Cesar CHavez - Ranked no.1 p4p at the time and a legend of the sport. Someone better than anyone on Jones' resume.

Oscar de la Hoya - Ranked no.1 p4p at the time and I think Whitaker edged him whilst past his prime.

Azumah Nelson - Again, someone I rank higher all time p4p than anyone on Jones' resume. Whitaker put on a clinic.

Buddy McGirt - Was top 5 p4p going into the first Whitaker fight and top 10 p4p going into the second. Whitaker won both fights, one close and one lopsidedly.

Felix Trinidad - Consensus top 3 p4p at the time and Whitaker fought him after being inactive and out of drug rehabilitation. He was also 35 years old and way past his prime. Banged with Tito even after getting his jaw broken at a time when Trinidad was Ko'ing everybody. Still managed to make a good scrap of it and give Trinidad some scares, albeit not winning more than about 4 rounds.

    NOW, onto Roy Jones.

He has one guy on his resume that he fought when he was top 10 p4p:

James Toney - Ranked 2nd p4p when Jones toyed with him.

    THAT'S IT.

You're being a bit unfair to Jones on your end as well. Jones didn't have any other top 10 P4P fighters on his resume sure, but there were also none in his weight class or around it.

And I can't see someone ranking Nelson over Hopkins all time, or McCallum for that matter. Jones also I believe has more total title defenses than Whitaker, and like Whitaker, unified a division.

I have Whitaker ahead like I said, but you're using criteria which sheds little light on what Jones did.
