Whitaker or Jones? Who should rank higher on a p4p list?

Depth of resume is a matter of opinion. Wins, KOs, titles held, etc. are not. So, like I said, on any unambigious criteria, Jones is easily better.

Ross Purity hasn't even faced a great fighter so ....

McNeely fought one great, who was past his prime and got coldcocked so....

Whitaker imo is 5-1 against those p4p'ers. I don't judge him according to boxrec, sorry.

It's not a matter of opinion of the fighters on his resume and what THEY accomplished. If you don't look at who they beat, you end up rating low level fighters with one or two losses and multiple titles over great fighters with one or two titles and more losses and wins over good fighters.

So then Kid, using your criteria, you rate Mayweather as the best fighter ever? Along with Ricardo Lopez, Sven Ottke, and Marciano?

If you look at only wins (not who they are over), KO's (not who they are against), and titles (in an era when their are 4 titles per weight class and 18 weight classes) then we should really just stop discussing this. Numbers, while important, need context.

PBF-not the best fighter ever, but his undefeated record and titles in 5 weight classes are an accomplishment worthy of consideration. And, he's no doubt better than Whitaker

Ottke-hardly, even decent. And, his paltry KO percentage confirms it.

Marciano-Whether you consider him the greatest ever depends on what your criteria is.

And I have him no where near Whitaker. Agree to disagree. I think numbers are important, but need context.

His footwork was great at middle and super-middle, at light heavy it wasn't that great, at light heavy his ring generalmanship wasn't as good and neither was his head movement if you watch closely.

You are absolutely right that those things are boxing skills, but compared to sweet pea in those areas he falls well short apart from maybe footwork.

If Jones had all-time great boxing skills his fall wouldn't have been so dramatic, fact is as soon as he slowed down he has looked an average fighter at best, Jones got by all those years by athleticism and confidence. Griffin outboxed him plain and simple in the first match and he was 5'9. Jones didn't fight on the inside because he was weak on the inside, Please tell me a fight where Jones fought well on the inside?

Whitaker won the Light Welterweight title as well, but nice try. Aside from, wins over Hopkins and Toney, Pea's resume destroys Jones, and Pea's wins over Nelson and Chavez(and arguably DLH, which many scored for Pea) are at least as good if not better than even Roy's top wins.

So, based on top wins, it is close, Pea gets the edge. Based on second tier wins, Pea by landslide. Based on willingness to take on the best, Pea by a mile. Based on # of titles won, even, though Pea unified and was undisputed at LW. Based on dominance, even. Based on talent, Jones by a small margin.

So, what criteria are you using? Just based on talent? I'll take the more accomplished great who wanted to fight and fought the best, at all times.:good

Why are Jones's top wins better? Toney and a young Hopkins above Chavez, Nelson, arguably DLH, etc? I give the edge to Pea even in that regard.

Titles held, even. Skill level of fighters fought in those title reigns, Whitaker gets the edge. Wins, also Whitaker. KO's? What does that have to do with anything? Why not Rosario ahead of Pea then? On my "ambiguous" criteria that I listed, Whitaker is easily better.

Do you not think you underrate McCallum a bit? I favor him over everyone that has ever fought at 154, I have said that before, but not above everyone capable of fighting there.

I have highlighted the picks I agree to be favored in red, the ones I have about 50-50 in blue, and the ones I favor McCallum in green. As you can see, I think very highly of McCallum skill-wise. I may even overrate him, but I don't think so many should be favored. I think he is perfect to beat Hearns at 154.

Sure Sweet Pea, your opinion is definitely unbiased. :patsch
So, you want to use depth of resume. OK, when was the last time Floyd got TKO'd by a low level journeyman, or Jones, or even Otke for that matter. Shitaker is overrated because of rabid fans like you.

You count Whitaker's loss due to breaking his clavicle against Bourjourquez when he was 37 years old in 2001, two years AFTER he was by all accounts totally shot against Tito, and hadn't fought in those two years. I think that says a little more about your hate for Whitaker than it does me being a fan. That's one of the most ridiculous things I've heard.

You've completely exposed yourself in this thread. Do yourself a favor: go out, learn something about boxing, and then come back and apologize. :good
