Cleaner punching matters more. Harder comes into play more when the fight is close and so are the amount of punches landing cleanly. If harder punching was more important than that, pure boxers would be at a huge disadvantage in each and every fight.

Spinks ran from Taylor yes, he also didn't throw 60 punches a round. I doubt he threw half that. You cannot compare Spinks and Whitaker. Never seen Dirrel fight.

so now hard punching does matter, Im glad you corrected that.

    BTW, they matter equally IMO.

Pauly ran from Ngodjo for some rounds and threw pitter pat punches, Ndojo landed the much harder punches - I thought he won the fight.

Spinks' style is alot like Pernels.

Dirrel is worse than both of them.

Whitaker fools many people. Defense comes to mind as his main attribute. Even all the people who know how complete a fighter he was all round see him as a defensive specialist first and foremost. KG, Sweet Pea, Sues2nd, and Brooklyn1500+, will tell you the same. Whitaker will simply remembered for his slick defensive boxing more than anything else, why? Because he was one of a kind at that aspect of the sport.

However, he was superb in other areas of his game. His jab is constantly rated among the best ever, only behind Holmes and Hearns, some others as well. He never had a Manuel Medina type jab, the type which is thrown with nothing behind it while being on the move. And he was as accurate a fighter as you'll ever see in your life. Chavez's head got rocked back with some crisp jabs, and monster left hands bounced off his head. Power punches, thats offense. Whitaker also gave Chavez a working over inside during the late rounds. IMO Whitaker's offense was more varied and better that night than what Chavez produced.

Because Whitaker never bulldozed through fighters the way Pacquiao or Duran did doesn't mean he never had good offense.

Whitaker was so varied it's unreal. One of the best multi dimensional fighters ever to grace the sport.

Why would I need to correct it. I never said it didn't matter.

Harder punching needs to be taken into context of the fight, otherwise the sluggers would win every decision. That's why it says "clean punching". And defense is part of scoring too.

Spinks style is NOTHING like Whitaker's. Whitaker would often stand right in front and throw combos while ducking and weaving. He would move around the ring often enough sure, but he would pump the jab while doing it. Spinks turns his back and runs off, and has NEVER thrown the leather as often as Whitaker. Whitaker also threw power punches. He just wasn't a powerful fighter. You don't hold as many compubox records as he does while being a "runner".

Sorry Ramshall, but you sound like a rock and roll fiend who when hired as a critic for Billboard Magazine, he pans every R&B album cuz he hates that type of music, no matter how good it is. You are equating all defensive styles together....I have seen you do this often. You label defensive fighters runners.

It doesnt say "harder punching" so I guess it doesnt matter.

WRONG, Often when Zab Judah was coming up boxing writers and commentators would say he has "too much Whitaker" when he was too defensive and ran. I guess they were all writers for Rolling Stone.

One Spinks' idols is Pernell - he models his style alot after him. This is common knowledge.

There are lots of mexican fighters who model their style after Chavez, and fight nothing like him.

And most boxing commentators are like you and Larry Merchant, who hate defensive fighters cuz it doesn't sell fights. Just like they hate defensive football teams and basketball teams. Then they group them together.

    Spinks fights NOTHING like Whitaker.

There are alo who do fight like him - doesnt mean they are all as "good" as him but their style is alot like his. Seems like your confusing the two.

BTW defense in Football is still exciting, cause they hit hard and theres plenty of contact. Too much defense in boxing means alot less hitting and little contact. Defeats the purpose IMO.

So then how was this Whitaker? Since he threw a ton of punches?

No, I am not confusing the two. Very few of the Mexicans who try to imitate Chavez's style get it right. And Spinks, if he is trying to imitate Whitaker is doing a poor job. I think perhaps you lump them all together. Anytime you post in a defensive fighters thread, you call him a runner.

Defensive football and basketball teams are overlooked often. It's called boring. This is why they changed the rules in both sports to allow for more offense.

ODLH wins this one close or a tie at best... Sweet Pea didn't do enough in this fight. The Chavez-Whitaker was robbery, this fight is not.
