Why would it not be 10-9? A knockdown doesn't automatically mean 10-8 when the other guy wins the rest of the round.
I thought it was a clear 10-8 round, Quartey took many hard shots after the KD, some of the punches missed, but still he took a beating and he referee almost stopped the fight. Many referees would have stopped it.
So why were they still trying to stop DLH's blood nose as the cards were being read out whilst Whitaker was practically on the top rope celebrating? Also, you probably think Miguel Angel Gonzalez beat Oscar, given that Oscar's eye was nearly closed shut in that fight. :good
Once again, Quartey lying on the ropes having his head snapped back several times after he got up from the knock down, on the verge of having the fight stopped, sealed an already 10-8 round let alone a 10-7 it almost could have been scored. After that, Quartey would pop a jab out, both fighters exhausted, but barely land any of them. That "rest of the round" was virtually useless for both fighters.
Rounds last 3 minutes, that happened in the first thirty or so seconds. I understand how people would have that round 10-8, but I disagree.
Funny, I don't recall Oscar having a bloody nose. Regardless, if that was true, all that means is both landed punches which is obvious. Compubox saw Pernell landing more jabs but Oscar landing more power punches which was pretty obvious. Bloody noses can happen in your sleep. lol Almost swollen shut eye means you ran into something pretty damn hard
How can you not remember DLH having a blood nose if you've seen the fight as many times as you claim? Try looking at the second half of the fight! DLH swelled Whitaker's eye up with a punch in the second round. From that point on he did no physical damage to a Whitaker with a swollen lead eye. That is testament to how ineffective his punches were. I'm not saying Whitaker's punches were effective either, but for me Whitaker had edges in defense and ring generalship and that gave him a narrow win.
It wasn't 2:30 left! lol And both fighters landed but it was one punch at a time and you can count them on one hand. Listen, no fighter gets murdered like that and goes on to close the round at 10-9. To get a round you got knocked down in to get scored that you need to dominate the rest of the round. Quartey didn't dominate anything let alone win 10 seconds of it
Well 2 minutes left then. I disagree that you have to dominate the rest of the round to make it 10-9. You just have to come back and win the rest of the round clearly, which Ike did. The fight was not almost stopped because during the flurry you have to remember Quartey was also landing some good punches. He wasn't landing as many as Oscar, but he was also landing good shots. I wouldn't call that getting murdered.
Quartey landed a few punches during that exchange but the amount of clean, brutal shots Oscar landed was far more superior and didn't need the ropes to keep him up. Even Merchant or Lampley were saying the ref was going to step in to save Quartey. Quartey was a tough dude to take all of that and survive but that's the most he did that round -- survive and stay on his feet. Just because he landed a few jabs in the last couple minutes doesn't give him a point back. An argument could be made the same way that Oscar should have had a 10-7 round. I scored it 10-8 but just saying
Oscar was the more aggressive fighter, I readily concede that. More effective? I don't know about that. Fact is, Whitaker exposed de la Hoya. He doesn't know how to fight Southpaws. How many Southpaw fighters did de la Hoya fight between Whitaker and Pacquiao? Zero. Why? Because Southpaw fighters make him look like Shi'ite - as did Whitaker and Pacquiao...
You're definitely a de la Hoya homer. The round was @ worst 10-8 but I can see an argument for 10-9 as Quartey was winning the round up to the point of the KD and Quartey won the remainder of the round after the KD and Oscar shot his wad. No way is there an argument can be made for a 10-7 round.
De La Hoya had actually shot up ahead of Whitaker on the p4p rankings. Jones too, but lost a fight right before Whitaker-DLH thanks to Griffin's acting skills. Whitaker's decline didn't show because of terrific welterweights like DLH, Quartey, Tito, etc..It showed in his performances against Rivera and Hurtado. Whitaker's performance against DLH was that sort of "last great performance by an aging great champion". Unfortunately, it came pretty much all on the defensive end, and not on the offensive end.
