I have posted sources on lists...ESPN, S.I, other posters, media...again, he is a top 50 atg (consensus).:deal
So Buddy McGurt was just a brawl come forward type of fighter ?What about Roger Mayweather or Azuma Nelson ? Its OK though Floyd would have fought him only after he lost a step or two so why even debate this ?
To the people picking Floyd (head to head), why do you think he wins? Whitaker has everything you need to trouble Floyd. He has one of the best jabs I've seen, the southpaw stance, speed, and defence on the same level as Floyd. Not only that, but he also has a high workrate, and when you compare it to Floyd's low workrate it gives Whitaker the chance to edge close rounds. If Mayweather uses the high guard and comes forward (as he tends to do against the southpaw) Whitaker will love it, and counter Floyd as he comes in. Judah was doing it to a prime Floyd for a few rounds, and we know that Judah is nowhere near Whitaker's level. If Floyd stands on the outside and boxes he will be introduced to Whitaker's jab for the full twelve rounds, and as the shoulder-roll is vulnerable to the straight left, he'll probably be getting tagged with that too. If Floyd tries to make it an infight, he'll find that Whitaker can hang with him there too, and Whitaker actually throws better body shots than Floyd. He's also willing to get rough and dirty, so Floyd's forearm to the throat won't make him back off. I'm not saying it's an easy fight for Whitaker. I think the fight is competitive, because Floyd is an excellent fighter and one of the best defensive boxers I've ever seen. His straight right will trouble Whitaker, along with his defence, general skill and ring intelligence. I just don't see him beating Whitaker, though -- Whitaker throws more, has a better jab, better bodyshots, top level defence, the southpaw stance, and he's able to fight in numerous ways, giving him no clear vulnerability for Floyd to exploit. (Floyd exploited Hoya's poor stamina, Judah's poor stamina and inability to fight when pressured, Hatton's reckless aggression, etc. What do you exploit against someone like Whitaker?) It would probably be close, but I give Whitaker the edge. In terms of the ATG ranking, that's a different discussion...
Whitaker would win. He would make Mayweather have to be more aggressive and that's why he'd win. Mayweather would have to put pressure on Whitaker to open up his southpaw stance. He tried to box with Judah and got out-boxed and so resorted putting more pressure on. Difference is Whitaker has a more consistent jab, is much harder to pin down with clean shots, and has the ability to use your aggression against you more consistently than Judah.
Against Mitchell, Judah, Corley, Ortiz he was more aggressive(all southpaw). That's no coincidence. Whitaker would make Mayweather dance to his tune and fight his fight once he resulted to being more aggressive. Infact Whitaker is THE one fighter I would pick to beat him.
No point debating this though. Mayweather wouldn't fight Whitaker, and that's the truth. Even his fans know it.
personally i think the h2h matchup would be close either fighter edging maybe 7-5 or 8-4 but ATG i think Mayweather would rank just a little higher he went through 5 divisions of beating the best wether many people like it or not and has remained undefeated. Whitakers record should also look better than it is though if it wasnt for the controversial decisions
I'll give you 140 but at 147 he fought the lineal champ in Baldomir, and the #1 Welterweight and #3 p4p in Mosley. yes if you want to you can talk **** on those fights but that can be done for any fighter not just Mayweather
Baldi will never be a hall of famer ,if he is he'd rank in the top 10000 and Mosely hasn't beat an elite level guy since a prime Oscar Delahoya ! And yes your right any fighters resume can be shitted on ..But Floyd is a hall of famer no question .. But against a guy like Pea I think he loses that all ..But again he wouldn't have fought him until he lost a step or too .. And for people's enjoyment ..It may have looked a little like this : [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWh0lVaE1A0[/ame]
Im not saying he was a hall of famer but he was the champion at the time, there's nothing wrong with fighting for the belt is there? Mosley was old but once again was the champ and he only chose him after the Pacquiao fight fell through and there was no other opponent available. And even though im not sure of a Mayweather win it would be a close fight that could go either way
There are alot of guys that were belt holders that didn't mean they were the best at the time . But lets keep it to Whitiker and Floyd ..
It be close but Whitiker would be more active imo ..But it may be as boring as the Whitiker Delahoya fight .. I mean two very good defensive fighters would be a receipe for a snooze fest ..
