Rigondeaux was never an elite fighter. That's worthless win for Loma. Even Loma said it. He was just laughing on the inside the whole time before the Rigo fight because he knew how easy it would be.

This pretty much sums it up. Ward is the right pick as of 2018.

 

He was WBO SMW champ almost continuously from 2012 until recently when he lost to Eubank jr. Not bad, I'd say .Beat some decent guys in the process....no HOF types but went 15-3 during that time frame after losing by UD to Ward.

 

Usyk won every single fight of the tournament on the road, culminating in shutting out Gassiev in Russia.

That gives him the edge for me, with all due respect to Ward.

He won it in a fairly close one from Stieglitz, made five defenses against C level to B- level opposition (at least two of which were very close calls) & he then stepped up again & got schooled by Ramirez...

Stieglitz was semi decent but that's about it.

AA has 6 stoppage wins at SMW out of 23 fights. 6 losses too. He is an average SMW with very average power IMO Small too..

In no way should he be compared to prime beasts like Gassiev in terms of threat level or pedigree at the weight. Gassiev is 6'4, was 24-0, 24yrs old & had just beaten Dorticos, Wlodarcyk & Lebedev gaining the IBF & WBA belts! He'll probably smash most other CWs over the next couple of years too...

He also got to the tournament final. AA didn't! Nor had Gassiev been dropped, nor had he already lost prior too.

 

I'll also add Usyk was working with a new corner too! That's a huge deal for a fighter.. Combine that with going to Russia to fight a Russian! In a final, with 14 fight's under your belt & he put's on a display like that! Appreciate, don't hate! Ward is a great fighter, whether he fought better opposition or not doesn't affect Usyks standing one iota! It has no bearing on today's CW landscape...
