As a brit, i like to see our fighters doing well, but i just don't see what he ever offers. No power, no engine, no technique..... Why is/was he so highly rated? Disclaimer - i never watched him fight pre-groves.
I think he did have good technique. He was a very slick and quick boxer. He was ranked highly because Froch done a number on Groves, he drew with Jack (which he basically through away), then Jack moved up. He was left as the longest unbeaten champion in the division. World champion yeah but I’ve never seen him as elite.
Well he did win gold at the Olympics, that alone ensured he'd get some hype when he turned pro. I said at the time he had too amateurish a style to succeed as a pro, he proved me wrong, he changed his style a lot, learned to sit down on his shots more, showed he could fight at closer range and overall getting away from his amateurish style. But he was never a stand out talent. He has decent boxing skills but he also is a little flat footed at times, he also has the dip in the mid rounds in every single 12 round fight. If the rumours are to believed he isn't the most dedicated trainer, if that's true it explains that dip in every fight he has which has cost him a few times now. He was fortunate he came up during a time when the super middleweight division was weak. Guys like Ward, Froch, Kessler would of beaten guys like DeGale, Groves and Jack.
Groves exposed him; then he had a good run, but always struggling to a degree. His best is past him, with drugs probably being involved. But since he's from the UK, he will always find a promoter to pay him good money.
Imagine what Kessler froch or ward would have did him. He is very average for a world champion has a lot flaws tends to be lazy lacks ko power seems slower has a large ego compared to ability and is not likeable
He improved after defeat to groves Bad day at the office against Caleb And then groves he had to learn the lesson degale did Ie being humbled to then reassess but at a later stage in life Both have achieved what they set out to do either way
McCracken For me He would have been well used to the ins and outs of the facility being gb and all Never a truer word said than If something ain't broke don't try and fix it He would have been brought through as an under charger to froch leaving Patience was all that was needed
He's a great talent, but his poor work ethic and laziness caught up with him. Degeale's bad habit of outclassing opponents for 4-5 rounds and then coasting the rest of the fight was never going to last.
Fair point, I'd pick McCraken over any trainer in the UK. I'm thinking more in terms of now, if he got serious and wanted to make a comeback, he has skill and doubt he can really change that much. Someone like Dominic Ingle could help with the lack of energy he has for large portions of his fights, a bit like BJS 2.0
