Not to mention 2 maybe 3 guys he could have fought, But Lewis had no more to prove. Went out with style regaining his Title. I think a rematch with Holy at that time was a waste of Lewis"s time...So did he do the right thing forum?

i agree, the vitali rematch would have been a good addition but him not taking it doesn't bother me like it does some people.

for me Lennox Lewis IS the perfect example of why 'achievement' based greatness is indeed inaccurate and in many cases so short of the mark/FACTS...

LL is a modern great, yes, and the greatest S-HW (is he???), but to be listed at the top among HW's and P4P is absolute B U L L S H I T and more than a compliment to him and fighters like him.

He IS Great, but history not only would have, but DOES show contrary for him, he was cautious, carefull and at times ordinary, was losing some important matches and would have probably lost some rematches that never happened and did lose to some fighters he shouldn't have lost too.

Over 150 or more fights you can/will/should have some flat performances, but over 30 or 40 fights with amble time for rest, healing and training just doesn't wash. same treatment for all.

LL should be viewed and ranked and placed with all theses facts/truths attached to his career and FULL fight record!!!

I agree too. He shouldn't have promised the rematch after the Vitali fight though. It's the only thing that leaves a bit of bad taste after he retired.

If I were him I'd just say "we'll see" in the ring, then just admit I'm getting too old for this and don't want to make the mistake of so many champions before me. Who would have blamed him then?

Even if he was scared to rematch Vit at the age of 38, no shame in that. He did prove he's a great champion in the first encounter and, whatever to say about it, he came out on top fair and square.

I think he did the right thing. He couldn't fight anyone but a Vitali rematch at that point without losing respect. I don't blame him for not going double or nothing with Vitali at that point in his career.

He should have retired after the Tyson fight. I'm not sure what he was hanging around for. Just found it a little hard to walk away I guess.

Lennox had done more than enough to secure his legacy and certainly for me the actual fight he'd had with Vitali showed me that in his own prime he would've wiped the floor with Vitali - by the end Lennox was just fat and sloppy tho so what's the point in risking your health when there's really nothing left to prove - he already did the honourable thing and give the new threat in the block at shot when he was shot himself

It was good to see Lennox beating the system by getting out and STAYING out as World Champion. Thus joining Rocky Marciano and Gene Tunney.

LENNOX taking a fight with PRIME VITALI on two weeks notice and beat him, that's a true warrior. He was not even in the best shape. He never ducked anyone. He had the JAB, the PUNCH and the CHIN.

He was 37 and had arguably fought the greatest assortment of huge, strong, powerpunching heavies in the history of the championship. He was fine to leave at that point.

I don't think anyway rates LL anywhere near the top on a p4p basis. ATG heavyweight yes, but P4P? Not even close. Holyfield is miles ahead of Lewis on a P4P basis, and I'm a huge Lewis fan.

Well said...these days your resume retired or not is based on your ability to be great...And im sure theres a good reason Lewis didnt take some of those rematches. He wasnt really a risk taker at times...
