Going out on top is the best thing ANY boxer, in fact any sportsman, can do.

Was it the best thing for him to do? Yes. He didn't need another war from Vitali and by leaving when he did, he got to go out on top. By that stage, I don't think he wins the rematch.

As a fan, I'm only annoyed that he promised the Vitali rematch before retiring. Besides that, good for him. Tons of boxers who retired too late, but I've never seen one that got out too soon. This is no sport for half measures and once retirement's on the brain, best to walk out the door before you get beat out of it.

Yeah, because, as with most champions who stay too long, something embarrassing was going to happen to him.

I agree! It is far better to go out a little soon than a little too late.

Lennox beat every man that got in the pro ring with him. Lennox beat Vitali when barely 80% fit on 10 days notice. Brudder Wlad didn't want any part of Lennox so what incentive was there for him to stick around? Yes Lennox retired at EXACTLY the right time Second only to Ali

I personally saw it as a refreshing change to see a great heavyweight champion go out on top of his game, and with his health and money intact.

We can argue about the minutia, but we should all be gratified to see this.

Ali should have retired way before he ever fought Holmes..

I dont think either of them wanted anything to do with the other..But I dont really think Lennox would have lost the rematch..He wins a decision and then retires

Lewis said he would take the rematch with Vitali. He ran his mouth. He watched Vitali KO Johnson and Sanders. Then when the money was up ( 18 million for Lewis ) and the WBC ordered the re-match, Lewis quietly retired.

He accomplished a lot, but his ego finally wrote a cash his body no longer wanted to check. He knew he would likely lose the re-match, and painted himself into a corner.
