.........world champion, at some point, had Muhammad Ali called it a day after Manila,as many of us wish he had have done ?

Quite feasible in my opinion. Ken Norton,George Foreman and Young would have been the big three in the frame had Muhammad's retirement come about.

Jimmy's style was not too popular with the officials..Young always had four opponents in a fight.
yes indeed he could have been champion..I think a motivated Young could have edged Norton in a rematch..and he always would have George Foreman's number. To those who persistantly cite the hot, muggy weather in San Juan, I'll counter by paraphrasing the esteemed Joey Maxim's words,.."what do you think,..Jimmy had air conditioning" that night he beat Foreman? young would have always frustrated, evaded and outlasted big George...the young, bombastic, low in stamina version, or the old, patient, more methodical version of later years.
Then there's Earnie Shavers. Sure he stopped Young earlier, but for Pete's Sake, it was Jimmy's 11th pro fight!! The rematch was a draw, and the mature, savvier slickster Young would have embarrassed Earnie the third time around.
Young's ascenscion to the heavyweight title would have been a nightmare for the powers that be in boxing, and granted, except for devotee's of crafty, defensive negative stylists like me and a handful of others, his reign would not have been any more poplular than was Sammy Angott's in the lightweight division in the 1930's. The likely successor of Young's would have been a prime Larry Holmes, the beloved Larry Holmes, who would have been welcomed as a more marketable, exciting replacement as heavyweight champ. more than likely, a Holmes-Young bout would haver been an ugly, tedious affair with the edge in dynamics going to Holmes, who would have narrowly outpointed Jimmy for the title. No knockdowns and with Young making Larry look bad "whilst" using every awkward defensive technique that his mind could conceive. To recap, yep, you betcha Jimmy Young could have been heavyweight champion, but all this would have been contingent on the rarest of phenomena,..that being honest judges, which Jimmy was almost never fortunate enough to experience.

Absolutely Col. Sanders...Young was screwed TWICE..Norton was screwed over too, but honestly, a bout should be scored honestly, without any biases on behalf of the judges on the criteria of style..if they did, then Young would have been crowned champion vs Ali..and like wise, Norton would have won the title. It would have been Norton vs Young for the undisputed title, and i think Young was just too clever for Kenny...waaaay too clever for Foreman.

It always makes me laugh when some use the San Juan heat as an excuse for Foreman losing to Jimmy. The same bull**** gets trotted out about George's loss to Muhammad Ali in Zaire.

:deal kind of silly thread Stevie, in the sense that most people respond this way of course

I still don't see it happening for Jimmy. It sounds a little cliche, but I just don't think it ws meant to be.

I always thought that Jimmy Young fought like a guy that was afraid to get hurt.

The judges felt the same way, despite what their eyes showed them.

Most will know by now that I'm a massive Ali fan. My favourite ever boxer,but.......YES........ I DO admit that Muhammad was extremely lucky to have been given the nod over Young in that fight.

If Young hadn't stuck his head out of the ropes then he probably would've gotten the W against Ali

He stuck his head out of the ring against George as well, and that sure did not cost him the bout on the scorecards. And the Ali=Young scorecards were lopsided all for Muhammad and it was not a close decision. One judge gave Ali 13 rounds and the others weren't far behind. Not sticking his head out of the ropes does not win him 7 rounds.

It's all down to the style which Jimmy found most beneficial in order to win. Nobody claims that Jake La Motta fought like a guy who wanted his opponent to smash his face in ! :D
