After the Firpo fight the rule was amended to read the boxer scoring the knockdown MUST go to a neutral corner.The word MUST is the important change in the wording.interesting that Barry the referee did NOT enforce this rule in the 8th round when Tunney knocked Dempsey down with a left hook, but instead started counting immediately.
Yeah he couldnt start his count fast enough, i've read loads of stuff about the fight being fixec, no sorry, the ref being fixed and fight stipulations etc. Its all rumour of course as you know. But i got a video where Ferdie Pacheco discusses it with this Dempsey expert also.
If I remember correctly Dempsey wasn't used to the neutral corner rule. When Tunney went down Dempsey stood there waiting for Tunney to get up, so he could immediately attack Tunney. Which prompted the ferferee to be distracted & move Dempsey to a neutral corner. Thus causing "The Long Count" The rest is history. Bonus "Who Am I"? Who is the fighter in my new Avatar??
Yeah La-Califa but what McVey was pointing out is that later on in the fight Tunney dropped Dempsey and the ref never bothered to mention that he had to go to a neutral corner, he just started counting while Tunney was centimetres from Dempsey. Just an observation. Man i cant tell who's in your avatar, i thought it was Joege Arce but im guessing its from an older era and thats wrong.
Tunney vs Dempsey had the highest attendance for a prize fight until 1993. Chavez vs Haugen had 130,000+ attending. Most thought that Haugen lost his previous fight to Armando Campas, the answer to my riddle. The Campas fight was such a legitimate affair. Campas was announced with a 16-6-2 record, in reality he was 0-5-1. A lot of fans felt as if Campas had won the bout; but Haugen won with scores of 99-91, 99-93, and 97-93. I don't know if it would have kept the previous attendance record safe had Haugen officially lost to Campas. It's not as though Haugen had much of an impact on that fight's attendance. Terrence Ali may drawn just as many people. My apologies, I wasn't exactly sober when I created this thread.
Actually, I think it was Haugen's remark about Chavez's opponents being nothing more than "Tiajuana taxi drivers" that helped drive up the attendance, because of the desire to see the national hero avenge the honor of Mexico.
I think Dempsey Tunney had the highest paid attendance til Chavez Haugen, think one of Zales fights had 130k+ attendance but wasn't paid attendance
